Long Story:
So it has been two weeks since I gave birth but life just got out of control for a while so I didn't have time to post anything. I was due April 27th but during my regular 38 week visit I mentioned that the fetal movement had been decreased that day. My baby was known to have a few anomalies, a cleft lip and palate, ectopic kidney, and echogenic focus in the heart, so they were being really cautious and did an NST. During the test Emma's heart rate had a few decelaratins that indicated she was either under distress or playing the the umbilical cord. They weren't TOO worried, but it happened enough that they made me come back the next day to repeat the test. The next day the declarations happened again. They decided to let me go home and have me come back for another test the next day. If happened a third time they would send me to L&D for more monitoring. Well Friday came and I just had a feeling they were going to want to induce me. I asked DH to come with me to the appointment but he didn't want to because it's really boring to watch an NST and he thought everything was going to be fine. I started crying because I didn't want to go alone and that's when he realized it was serious. We went in and the decelarations happened again so I knew they were going to send me to L&D. I figured there was no rush and I wanted to go to my office to get my phone charger and lunch I had packed (I work in the same building) but they wouldn't let me walk anywhere. They had to wheel me up to L&D. That's when I knew this was really happening. I got to L&D and they suggested I get a foley bulb to start things off. The insertion of the foley bulb was by far the most painful part of the labor process. I was at 1cm and hardly effaced, my body wasn't really ready for this yet. They put the bulb in at 4pm and said it would probably take around 4 hours to mechanically dilate my cervix. I contacted my mom and told her she should get on a plane because I was probably going to have the baby the next day. She hopped on a plane and was to the hospital by 8:30pm. Right after she got there I had to go the bathroom and when I went it was really difficult to pee. I had to push pretty hard and voila, the foley bulb came out which meant I was dilated to a 4 or 5. They were suprised at how fast it had worked. At that point my contractions really started to pick up. The monitor wasn't picking them up though and I kept telling the nurse that I wasn't getting credit for all of my contractions! Around 1am they decided to start with a small amount of pitocin. That's when the contractions REALLY started to pick up. They were kind of like one big contraction and didn't come down completely between peaks. That's when I asked for the Epi which was amazeballs and I'm so glad I got it. I told the nurse again that they weren't picking up my contractions because they were just one big contraction and there baseline was off. She finally told the doctor and they put an internal monitor on my uterus so they could finally see the contractions. Then they were like whoa....that's a lot of contractions. Then, while I was trying to get some sleep finally around 4am some alarms went off and about 7 Dr.s and nurses rushed in and slapped oxygen on me. They turned me on my side and told me to breath deeply. Aparantly the baby's heart rate had dropped and stayed low for 7 minutes. That's when they decided that they should turn off the pitocin because the baby wasn't handling the monster contractions. I agreed because I thought my pre-pitocin contractions were big enough!! Everyone was concerned though and they said that they would start up the paper work for if I needed a c-section. I slept for a few hours and around 7am I said that I thought I was getting close. They checked me and I was 9cm! They broke my water and said things would probably progress quickly now. At 10am I said I thought I was ready to push. The Dr. came in and gave me a pep talk about how to push and what the plan was. We did a "practice" push and she was like 'whoa, she's crowning! Get the other Dr.s in here!' I was really worried that if Emma's heart rate dropped again they would try to do a c-section so I was motivated to get here out quickly. I pushed probably about 5 more times as hard as I could and at 10:27am Emma Rose was born! 6lb 12oz, 21in, 38wks 6 days. She is beautiful and I cried when I saw her.
I was worried they were going to try to take her to the NICU but they just looked her over and said she was good to go with me to my room. When we were in recovery the Dr.s were kind of jerks and kept trying to get me to give her formula. I had hand expressed some colostrum before I got to the hospital so she had had that in the first hour, I was pumping every two hours and hand expressing colostrum but my milk just wasn't in yet. It wasn't supposed to be. They said that we couldn't leave the hospital until my milk came in which was aggravating because I just wanted to go home and sleep in my own bed. I know she has a feeding difference but I was prepared for that and had a bunch of techniques ready to make sure she was getting fed. Finally i got all Mama Bear on them after day 4 and they let me go as long as we did daily weigh ins with our pediatrician. So we did and the extra Dr. appointments were annoying but yesterday (11 days old) she surpassed her birth weight! I couldn't be more proud to be her mama!! Here is a pic of my little monkey!
