Drinking?

Question for you ladies, when did you or are you going to have your first drink- if you didn't drink during pregnancy? I didn't drink, little lady is 9 days old and old id like to have a beer. We are BF though and she just started taking bottles of breast milk too. Just curious about what everyone's plans were!

Re: Drinking?

  • I'm not a doctor, but I think the rule of thumb is to wait an hour after you finish your drink to breastfeed - that gives it enough time to work out of your system. No need to pump and dump.

I took a breast feeding class and they said one to two drinks a day were fine--optimally timed so it was right after you nursed so it has time to leave your system, but even if it wasn't timed that way you should be fine as long as you feel okay, like pp said if you are ok to drive you can nurse. I don't know when I had my first drink, it was a couple days after getting home from the hospital. I never have more than one a day, and sometimes not even a full drink because I'm a bit of a lightweight.

Had our first baby, Samuel Robert, on April 17, 2014!

  • I am two weeks PP and have not had a drink yet. I'm feeding on demand and she has had quite a few cluster feeding sessions so I'm going to wait another week or two until she is more consistent with her feedings before I have a drink. (I'm probably being more cautious then I need to be)

Ps. I did buy 4 bottles of wine today so it's on my mind!!

  • Last time around my pedi told me to wait 3 months so that is what i am doing again. I have a sip of my DH's drink. I can't wait to drink and nice glass of red wine.

Two weeks after my daughter was born I had my first glass of wine. I've had a glass a night a couple of times since then. I asked the lactation consultant at the hospital & she said a drink a day was fine while breastfeeding.

  • I had a drink when I got home from the hosp.

From what I've read any more than one drink results in waiting two hours after per drink.

  • I have a beer or small glass of wine with dinner most nights. As others have said, the most recent research reveals negligible amounts pass to breastmilk from one drink.

I like the okay to drive, okay to breastfeed line.

This! As I'm enjoying a glass of Pumking that DH bought saved for me back in the fall!

  • Had my first drink the day I came home from the hospital, although I brought it to the hospital to have then. I have about a drink every other day, usually while LO is feeding but not always.

I had most of a whole beer a few days after we got back from the hospital, and often have half a glass of wine in the afternoon while I'm nursing.

It's a lovely treat after abstaining for such a long time.

I do look forward to eventually have a more substantial quantity of wine, but I'm going to wait a while for that :)

Actually, the quantity of alcohol in breast milk from one drink is negligible (and I mean negligible!), don't even worry about waiting.

I'm nursing a glass of red wine and a baby as I type this.

    Excellent multitasking!
  • I haven't had any alcohol yet ( 5 day old baby). But only because I haven't been in the mood lately. I love wine though. PP covered it pretty well though. Kelly mom has info as well
  • I had a beer the day after he was born.

I'm having a drink right now.  I have some wine almost every night, but sometimes I dont finish the glass.  If he's sleeping well, I might have 2 drinks.

  • Had my first drink tonight. Today makes me exactly 4 weeks PP so DH and I went to dinner. They had .99 margaritas for Cinco de Mayo so I gave in :)

The only reason to pump and dump is to keep your supply up. I over indulged in sake on my birthday and was still buzzed when it was time to feed so we have her a bottle of previously pumped milk and I pumped and dumped so as not to hinder supply. But I would drink a glass of wine right after feeding and not bat an eye.
I went out to watch the Hockey game with sisters a few days ago and had a few beers. I pumped when I got home to keep my supply up and relieve some engorgement and just dumped the couple of ozs I got and went to sleep and pumped like normal afterwards. Good times were had by all!

  • I'm scared having a beer will knock me out ha! I might have to give in and try it out soon, though!
  • I had a glass of champaign on Saturday because I was part of a wedding party. 11 days PP. But knowing me, it will be a few months before my next drink.

Is there a difference btwn wine/beer and hard alcohol? Eg having one margarita for cinco de mayo after a feeding? :) Should I pump and dump or to the same rules apply (okay to drive okay to bf/wait 2 hours)?

It depends on how many oz of hard liquor is used in the drink- generally the same rules apply but for me personally I try and wait an extra hour or so when I have a liquor drink (unless I nurse the drink for a long time then I keep with the two hours)

  • LO was having a fussy afternoon, so I cracked open a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for a 2 pm feeding. It was delicious, and I figured it was better I enjoy a drink in the afternoon when a nap might happen, rather than at dinner. O:-)
  • I've had a beer or glass of wine a few times. Hard for me to finish the whole drink because it only makes me more sleepy!

  • We've gotten into the routine where DH comes home from work around 7 and I head upstairs with a glass of wine for a shower and "me time." It's 30 minutes of heaven, and just what I need to get recharged before night time feedings.
