Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Roseola

So...this is FUN!

Who has been through this? LO had a cold, then a fever, and we went to the doctor when it spiked at 104. Got diagnosed with a double ear infection and started antibiotics. The next day the rash hit, we went back to the doctor. So, roseola on top of it all.

He's not itchy, it just looks bad. But he's SO tired and cranky - inconsolable like I've never seen him. Normal, I guess? And how long does it take for this rash to go away? I feel like we can't even leave the house unless I put a sign on him that says, "No, I don't have measles. I got my shots."

Re: Roseola

  • I agree with pp, the rash didn't come until after the fever was over.  As far as suggestions, pain relievers and baby carrier was what got us through.

  • Both of my kids have had it. Neither had cold symptoms, just really high fevers for several days. Then about 24-48 hours after the fevers broke the rash presented. My DS had it when he was about 15-18 months, he's 7 now. My DD did at 6.5-7 months.
Each time they had urine, labs, etc done and it was all normal.
It doesn't sound like roseola to me. I agree that it's most likely a reaction to the meds.

Doesn't it show up after the fever??

OP - DS had a fever for a few days and then had a rash from forehead, stomach and back. Went away in 2 days
  • We went back to the doctor to make sure it wasn't an allergic reaction. That was my first thought, bc LO is allergic to the "-illins." But he's on Omnicef, and has done ok on it in the past (not that that's a guarantee, but this rash is nothing like what he got when he had the allergic reaction).

And to clarify, the rash showed the day after the fever broke.
I'm wondering if the fussiness is just the combined ear infection and maybe molars finally coming in too. I keep thinking those suckers are busting through, but nothing yet. He does seem to get sick every time he's teething.

  • Oh yeah, then that sounds right. Mine were both fine before the rash even showed. It very well could be the teeth. Maybe his tummy is upset from the meds too. Poor little guy.

When DD had this about 6 or so months ago I assumed it was teething. She had a random fever (about 101) then two days later the rash came. She acted like nothing was wrong.

Cut to last Saturday, again a random fever, assumed it was teething. Two days later daycare calls us and said they' had a case of hand, foot and mouth. They checked all the kids over and discovered she had it too. She's been totally fine though.

I think it your LO is really fussy, etc. it might be the ear infection/teething like you said.

  • My daughter had it a couple weeks after her 1st birthday. She had a fever. She just felt warm when I put her to bed and then when I got into bed and checked her again she was hot. She had a high fever and was very fussy for three days. Especially in the wee hours. Her rash appeared the day after her fever broke all over her body. It was there for around two days.
  • Thanks everyone! The rash is clearing up - I'm amazed it can start to go away so quickly. I was sure he'd look like that for weeks. But like PP have said, two days, and it's moving out.

He's still super tired - took a 2 hour nap this morning, was up for 2 hours, and just went back down for a second. Glad he's getting some rest!
