UPDATE: 1st hCG and Progesterone Levels

Last night at 5w5d, I had my hCG and progesterone levels measured. They were at 14.3 and 7967, which is awesome!  I am going back tomorrow night for another test to make sure they are moving in the right direction.  The MD said she'd put me on a progesterone supplement treatment if that drops, rather than rises or stays the same.  So far, so good!  I'm doing this testing because I had a MC at 8 weeks last time. Anyone have to take progesterone during your pregnancy?

UPDATE (5/2):

4/29: hCG 7967 ; Progesterone 14.30
5/1: hCG 12519; Progesterone 13.63

MD doesn't like that the P has dropped, just because of my MC history.  Normal in a woman with no history, I guess?  Anyway... She's starting me on oral (thank god!) prometrium today.  This make me scared.  Do you think I should be scared?  I only spoke with the nurse who notoriously hasn't been able to provide too much guidance.  But I love the MD.  So I don't entirely know what to think.

Yes, I'm on progesterone now. It's a little messy, but well worth it. Good luck on your next test!

  • Good luck! Hope your numbers rise! I am also on progesterone supplements. It gets old fast, but I'm doing it for my baby. :)

  • @gsalyer06 - Messy?? Please explain!

What does the regimen look like?

  • I'm on pill form progesterone. No issues to report.
  • I take the pills as suppositories. They are pink and leave a pinkish discharge after they've been in a few hours.

    eew.  God, pregnancy is gross!

  • If you do have to take progesterone and use the pills as suppositories, invest in panty liners or super thin pads.  You'll be happy you did.
Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis
IUI#1- March 22 (100mg clomid, 75 mg of Bravelle, Ovidrel trigger) = BFP!!!

  • I'm on the progesterone gel- I've had a variety of "discharge" experiences, but mostly it's just liquid-like and doesn't stain or harden on the panties.  The worst part?  You should really "scoop" it out every couple of days because it turns to a sticky gel/solid consistency which keeps it inside.  It will really build up if you don't get it out fairly regularly.  Pretty much anything is worth it, but still kinda icky!
  • Updated.  Should I be freaking out?  (No. I know that I shouldn't be, but logic can't stop me!)

  • Did your doctor inform you that progesterone levels fluctuate on an hour to hour basis?  It could be what you ate before hand, or what you didn't eat before the last draw.

Like someone mentioned in another post, doctors have a bad habit of treating the "charts" and not the patient.  She saw a drop in a level and didn't like it… but did she ever inform you to take the draws first thing in the morning before you eat anything so they were consistent?

It's bizarre to me how many of the girls' docs on here are giving them cause for concern.

Bottom line: I wouldn't freak out.  If she REALLY thought they were that low, she'd have you on suppositories.

Thank you!  It just sucks that the nurse in the office doesn't have more to offer me in information.  (I'm an RN to a specific physician, and I do most of the patient education so I don't get it).  I didn't actually speak with the doctor.  And I don't think she's trying to give me cause for concern (that comes from me all alone!)  Because of my prior MC, I think this is precautionary.  However, since I'm certain the nurse doesn't know what she's talking about, I looked up the med in my drug guide.  She said she was going to give me 20mg (I think she meant 200?) And it also says the only uses for early pregnancy and implantation support are through vaginal suppositories.. Hmm.

I too am 5 weeks along and am on a progesterone suppository.  Mine is a clear/white and I haven't had any issues of large amounts of discharge.  After I put it in I lay flat for an hour so it completely absorbs.  Good luck to you and I know how it feels to be worrying about good levels~ and makings sure everything looks good.
  • I'm on a 50 mg progesterone suppositories. My dr. Said that it can help prevent miscarriages, but it's not proven. I take it at night right before bed and have had no issues. I'll stop when I hit 12 weeks.
  • I am taking oral progesterone. This is really just precautionary. I have read that pill form isn't as effective as suppository, but can still be supportive supplementing is needed. I had my progesterone checked after starting and it went up by 3.
