XP: MTHFR

Last week when we thought I was having my third miscarriage we did some genetic testing. Everything basically came back normal, except I am MTHFR heterozygous. Forgive me if I say anything wrong, but I am just now learning about this. Is there anyone here familiar with this and can give me some quick info and resources to check out? I am now having my to take a prescription prenatal, but I know this gene mutation impacts so much more. Looking for help. Thanks.

Re: XP: MTHFR

  • I was questioning the stuff I was finding online. I started to freak myself out when it said high dose folic acid was actually bad fof me. Honestly, some of the info that looked credible was a little over my head until I get a foundation. When I finally wrap my head around what all this means, I just might PM you.

Ha ha ha...we call it "motherf*cker in my office too.  I am not an OB so I don't order this test as part of a miscarriage workup but I do order it as part of a work up for blood clotting disorders.  I agree that being heterozygous is not usually an issue and is unlikely to require treatment.  Folic acid should not be a problem as far as I know since we sometimes actually use folic acid as part of the treatment for homozygotes (people with 2 abnormal copies of the gene).  Hope that helps!
  • I read this title as "motherf*cker" too. :D

  • I am also Hetero MTHFR (I found our when I was 8 weeks pregnant). I have a family history of clotting issues so my OB ran a coagulation panel. I took the a prenatal vitamin with a more bioavailable form of folic acid and also folgard as this mutation can prevent normal folic acid absorption. Other than that there were no changes in my pregnancy.
