2nd Trimester

xp:Progesterone Shots

I am posting this here, as well as the preemie board, to see if anyone has any feedback!
After having my first child prematurely, my doctor has recommended weekly progesterone shots for weeks 18-36 during my second pregnancy as an attempt to avoid a repeat performance. I am beginning them on Monday. I have the option of getting them in office (my insurance company already shipped me the rx, as well as supplies for injections) or having my husband do them at home. As far as I understand, where the injection site is makes it very difficult to self administer. Does anyone have experience/advice for choosing one over the other (nurse vs. husband that is). The doctor's office is 10 minutes from my office, so 20 minutes round trip, weekly. Not a huge deal, but enough to give pause for thought.
Thanks in advance for any advice (or any head's up/food for thought re: the shots)

I would personally rather be at home and have my husband do them. It might only be a 20 minute round trip, but you also might have to wait while you are there. If in home injections don't go well, you could always start going to the office.

  • They are pretty awful.  I go to the nurse, and the serum is thick so it takes a few seconds of holding the needle in.  I feel like the nurses know how to do it and it's minimally painful but then later hurts or can itch a lot.  I would not want to blame my DH for anything that was or wasn't his fault related to this.  When I go in, I get to hear the baby on the doppler and also give a urine test and get my bp taken.  That is all kind of a pain, but I'd rather know if something was wrong.
  • I also have to have these weekly injections.  I have chosen to have my husband give me my injections mainly because I didn't want to pay for the office visit each week.  Our sister in law is a L&D nurse and she walked us through step by step, which made both of us very comfortable with the process.  My OB suggested that I could have a nurse friend help with them if I wanted.
About the shot: it isn't too bad if you make sure your muscle is relaxed.  I do get sore but not until the 2nd day after the shot.  Good luck!
  • Im lurking from june 14, but I am finishing up my shots this week... Woohoo! Anyway, my husband did my shots and I would choose the same method again if need be. The nurse taught him, and we tweeked his method a little as we went. He was much more careful and compassionate than a random nurse would have been and sincerely tried to lessen any pain and discomfort from the shots. The rx is thick, so I found that warming it up helped and like someone else said, keep your muscle relaxed, dont flex right before or during the shot. Sometimes I laid my vial on a heating pad during a shower or I would just drop the vial in my cleavage to warm it. Massage the injection site a little immediately after the shot and walk around a little to spread it, I managed to not have any lumps afterward luckily. Good luck!
