Soreness in glutes??

Hello friends! This is an odd one, but I'm 16 weeks and yesterday I started feeling soreness in my glutes (both sides ), almost as if I did lunges or climbed stairs. And trust me, I haven't! I do sit at a desk all day, but try to get up every hour. What could this be?

Re: Soreness in glutes??

  • Not sure, I've kind of noticed this, too. I was really active before getting pregnant and I didn't work out AT ALL first tri because I was too tired. But I've noticed that if I am slightly more active one day, my legs and butt are really sore. Maybe it has something to do with the relaxin hormone?

Just a guess but sometimes I would get soreness for a little bit leading up to leg (or glute) cramps.  I take a calcium supplement which decreases both.

  • I don't know if it is related to pregnancy or not, but I have been having soreness/numbness in my left glute. It is the worst after spending the day at my desk. I try to stretch and walk around but it isn't getting better. Pretty annoying, I plan on asking about it at my next appointment.

This exactly.. I am thinking mine might be pelvic girdle pain.. does that happen in the lower back/ upper glute?

  • Lordy, yes. Last week it was my right butt, now it's my left butt. Feels like I worked out but -- ooops! -- I didn't. It's especially bad if I lean over (like unloading the dishwasher or picking something up) or put all my weight on one leg.

I don't know what it is, but at this point I think it's all normal. Our muscles and joints are moving all around. Stretching really helps me. I found some YouTube videos for sciatica, and those stretches seem to get to the source of the pain. Stretches for your IT band, and your TFL (tensor fasciae latae) can also help. Don't ask me what all that means -- I just know it's all in the same area and it all helps.

I also ask my hubby to rub my butt, and he usually obliges. You can also roll around on a small ball, like a tennis ball.

  • To add onto PP, there are Youtube videos by Gary Crowley regarding Pelvic Girdle Pain (I think that covers this issue) that I found helpful.  In the videos, he shows how to stretch and stimulate the muscle tissue with a tennis ball.  I hope that helps!  This pain has been such a pain for me as well so good luck to all!
