Baby Sign Language

We are planning on using baby sign language as babies as young as 6 months can start to communicate before they can speak.

I thought this link was helpful as it has some of the most used/basic signs!

Anyone else planning on using baby sign language?

Re: Baby Sign Language

  • I use it with my 18 month old son. We have only taught him 5 signs so far but it is a big help! We didn't start it with him until I think he was about 15 months so I am not sure how younger babies would do with it. It sure helps him though! He knows eat, milk, more, all done and bath. It really cute to see him doing his signs!

  • Definitely planning on it. I had a deaf friend in high school and took 4 years of ASL in high school and like 2 in college. I have forgotten most of it by now, but I'm planning on getting back a lot of before the baby comes. It's easy enough to pick up on. I have a few friends and my SIL who did it with their children and the difference is amazing! Few to no tantrums because they can tell you exactly what they want/ need. It really, really helps. There are a ton of books and CDs out there. Good Luck
  • Yes I will. I used it in the daycare I worked at. And I taught the twins that I nanny for. It is def helpful
  • Absolutely plan to use it! It helps children communicate faster which leads to less tantrums.
  • I use sign language with my 19 month old daughter she knows more, please, thank you, no, and cat haha. She does great! It helped her to not whine when she needed something instead she says please and you know she needs something. I definitely recommend it it works so well! Try teaching them as early as possible she caught on so quick. I tried to keep it basic with her because I didn't know what to expect I'm going to keep going with DD and teach my little peanut as well since they are only going to be 2 years apart:)
  • The only one I stuck with for DD was "please." But it's the cutest thing ever: the agressivd chest/belly rub coupled with "peese! peese! peese!"

  • I never did with DS, but sometime between 12-18 months he was already saying basics like: please, milk, all done. He is very talkative now (at 21 months) and other kids his age often still use the signs instead of saying the words. I know a lot of people swear by it and it IS really cute, I just never felt the need.

  • We starting teaching DD signs around 8 months and it has been wonderful! She can communicate so well now, and I very very rarely can't understand what she wants or needs. It's really well worth it!

  • I started with DD at 6 months and she never seemed to catch on but at 18 months she made her first sign and combined it with her words "all gone" :)

Same here, DD was an early talker (later walker, but early talker) she was always very communicative so there was no need for signing
  • I did it with DD and will definitely do it again.  I think it avoided a lot of frustration and she had no problem transitioning to language when she was ready.

    This ^^

We never felt the need to. I just taught my kids the words and they picked them up really quickly, both could start asking for the basics between 9-12 months. I've also seen some of my friends kids chose to sign rather than speak even after they how to say the words.

  • They use sign language at daycare and its a really great tool. I actually learning right along with DS. He's been using signs since about 12 months. He knows yes, no, please, more, milk and all done so far and uses them a good bit. He still whines a lot but I think there's a lot if potential for him to learn a lot more signs before he's capable of using his words verbally.

  • I guess we will have to because we went to visit some day cares last week and they all said they use sign language so we will need to do it at home to be consistent for our baby.
  • We used it with DD. She had about 10 signs she used consistently. Once she started talking I did expect her to say the word too even if she signed it. Had no problems with her refusing to talk.

  • I hope to find a daycare who does it! My niece was taught to sign and it was so helpful with her.

On a side note, my brother was a very late talker (he needed speech therapy). My mother says all the time she wishes she had thought of sign language so he wouldn't get so upset he couldn't use words.
  • I just went to a training about managing behavior with people who have disabilities that either limit or delay verbal language development. I was amazed at how teaching basic sign language curbed the aggressive and tantrum like behavior. They spoke about its use with babies and I was sold. It makes so much sense that a few signs can make everyone's life so much easier. And language begets labguage so teaching sign language sets children up to talk and communicate more readily. I will definitely be using it even if it is only one sign that makes communicating easier.

  • My MIL and FIL are both deaf and we will be using sign from the beginning
  • We did with DS and will again. Started doing it ti him at 5 mo or so and he did it back at like 9 mo. Really helpful when he started vocalizing but every B word was "bup" so signs helped us tell between "bread", "banana", "ball", "bath" and some others. Also liked being to communicate with him across a room full of people. He's talking a lot now so signs less, but I find myself using them with DH like when I want him to hand me a drink or check DS's diaper.

All of the zoo animal signs are really cute and made going to the zoo even more fun when DS would recognize an animal and start signing it.

  • I did some basics with my DD at 3 months. Pretty quickly she learned what milk was but would not sign it herself. By 5/6 months she was signing eat all of the time because she loves food. We would be out at the store and she would sign eat to a stranger. I was like i do feed her she just loves eating. Haha. She also learned to sign all done, and more. She hasn't really been using it lately though. She will not do the please sign yet.

  • I work at a preschool with 12-17 month olds, and we teach them the simpler phrases. I hadn't really thought about using it with my own kids, but it will probably happen naturally from the habits I've picked up from work. :)
  • We have done SL for both our girls and will for the baby on the way- I love that they can communicate an it def made life easier. Even if you can master 3 or 4 signs- the most important ones... It's great !
  • My sisters have all used baby sign language with their kids and I've seen how effective it is at helping their little ones get their needs across. I will definitely be using it with my little guy, especially because we don't speak a second language and I would love it if he picks up a longer term interest in sign from using it so young (I would love having a bilingual child, but unfortunately SO and I don't speak any other languages fluently.)

  • We definitely will this time around. DS1(2.5 years) is a late talker & just started speech therapy a few months ago. He is learning some signs now and it totally helps us understand him more.
