Pain after TDAP?

I got my TDAP vaccine yesterday afternoon at my 38 week appt. The nurse told me it may burn just a little. I felt the burning and it hasn't stopped yet! My arm isnt swollen but it hurts so bad I haven't gotten a drop of sleep. Its hot to the touch and I can't even lift my arm or attempt to lay on it without wincing in pain. Anybody have a similar experience or should I call my ob?

Re: Pain after TDAP?

  • My arm hurt like a bi$&@ for almost a week. Keep moving it as much as you can. Sorry! As if u need another discomfort right now!

  • I didn't feel any burning, but I did feel like I'd been hit in the arm by a line drive from a 90mph fast ball. For about 4 days.  The burning might warrant a call, at least they can tell you if that is normal or not.

  • My arm was sore for a few days, but it was more achy than burning.

  • I too could not even move my arm to brush my hair for about 3 full days after I got the TDAP.  By the 4th day it still felt sore, but I started to notice an improvement and I think it was better by around day 5.  Drink plenty of extra water, and try not to sleep on that arm!  (I made that mistake and woke up in agony!)
  • No burning, but totally achy and sore for like a week! I think burning and heat at an injection site may be a sign of a reaction to the vaccine. I would call the doctor about that to make sure.
  • It shouldn't be hot to the touch though... If it's still like that later today I'd call your OB. Burning and muscle soreness will happen, but it shouldn't be warm to touch. I have to get my Tdap done soon too, ugh! Feel better OP.

  • I got my shot in the butt/hip. Was definitely sore for a bit, but not hot to the touch. If you're concerned, call your OB or nurses line. Better safe than sorry.

  • Yes! I had a horrible reaction to mine. Arm was swollen and hurt for a week plus I came down with flu symptoms (fever, chills, sweating, nausea, body aches, dehydration) for two days. It was terrible! I had to remind myself over and over that it was best for baby.

TDAP is always rough for me. This time I had itching, heat, redness, swelling, and bruising that lasted nearly two weeks. A nurse told me it's the tetanus portion that makes it so reactive and painful.

  • My arm was a little sore for a few days, but that's about it.  Hopefully your arm feels better soon!
  • I only felt a little bit of soreness. I believe it's the tetanus booster part of the Tdap that is painful.
  • If it's hot to the touch you may have a skin infection from the injection site. GO IN RIGHT AWAY. I had one when I got a flu vaccine a few years back and this is how it started by the time I went in I was horribly sick, they almost had to admit me. If it is indeed an infection they can clear it up with antibiotics. I was so sick I stayed home for three days, felt like I had the flu with chills and all that.

  • I'd definitely put a call in. my arm was sore the few days after like i'd been punched, but definitely no burning or heat.

  • No burning or hot to the touch, but I could barely lift my arm for like a week. Definitely couldn't sleep on it either. I would call and ask about the burning and hot feeling, that doesn't sound normal.

  • Mine was only a tiny bit sore for a couple of days.

I'm a huge shot weenie and actually this shot was super easy for me. Not sore or anything. I had my DH get it and he had a hard time. Really sore knot in his arm. Painful to lift his arm shoulder height. Similar to you. It eventually went away. I think everyone reacts different and just getting the shot right in the sweet spot. I'd try to rub it out or call.
  • i agree with other posters--get it checked for an injection site infection. I got my shot in the upper part of my butt muscle and it definitely burned for a few minutes, but then it went away. The nurse said there was so much fluid for the shot that it had to go in my butt rather than my arm. Maybe that's why it hurt so much in your arm??

  • Mine was sore as well. I was told to massage it in and it should help
  • Well I called the Dr. They told me to come in. I've been here for awhile in L&D being monitored. They believe it may be an infection. Just great! Thanks for all the feed back ladies. I appreciate it. Glad I listened and called!
  • Mine was really sore for a few days too. I took an ice pack and used an ace bandage to hold it to my arm and just left it there and it REALLY helped.
