3rd Trimester

Baby breech at 32 weeks

I went for a 32-week ultrasound to see how my placenta previa was doing. Happily, the previa is completely resolved, but the doctor called me later to say the baby is breech, and we'd discuss it at 35 weeks.
A, Has anybody been breech at 32 weeks and had the baby turn by 35 weeks?
B, Has anybody tried Spinning Babies? I tried one of the positions, and the rest of the evening, the baby was moving a LOT, and now it feels like he/she is in a different position, but no way to know if that's head-down. Since Spinning Babies says not to hold these positions if your baby's not breech, I guess I'm done with that.
TIA!

  • At my 32 week ultrasound, the doctor said my baby was also breech. I didn't do anything to make her turn, but by my 36 week appointment, she was head down and now, two weeks later, is still that way. A friend experienced the exact same thing as well. Don't worry about it. :-D
  • DS was still breech at 34 weeks. I asked my doctor and he said he has plenty of time to flip. As it turns out my water broke at 36 weeks but some point in those two weeks DS decided to flip and we were good for delivery. I wouldn't worry.

  • My baby A was breech at 32 weeks and she turned head down, and has stayed that way so far (I am 35 w+4 d).  I worked with my prenatal yoga instructor on this (a lot of childs pose).

  • Definitely plenty of time for baby to flip.  I'd do the spinning babies stuff (just skip the breech tilt if you aren't sure baby is breech) - but the inversions and the recommended stretches are good.  A chiro who is trained in the webster technique is also a good idea - even if baby has flipped, will help keep things aligned for birth.
  • I am 32 weeks. My baby has been breech the entire time.
I am going for anotherUS at 35 weeks to see if she flips.
If she has not I know they can spin the Dr can try to spin them but it is not something we want to try.

    1. 50% chance it will work.
    2. Dr does it at the hospital they give you an epideral
    3. They can flip back
    4. Your water could break
    5. You could go into labor

I am hoping my girl flips but if not we will be scheduled for a c section I believe the week before I am due.

Still have time for our little ones to flip.

  • I agree with PPs, plenty of time to flip. Why didn't your doctor tell you she was breech when you were there? I would think they'd be able to telI looking at the sono. Just seems weird to me.

  • No worries as you have tons of time for baby to flip...I had marginal previa and baby was breech at my follow up a couple months ago...baby is now head down and fully engaged.  No sense in getting worked up at only 32 weeks.

  • Plenty of time to flip!  My firstborn was breech until 37.5.  ECV and spinning babies were unsuccessful, but my one and only trip to the chiro just before 38 weeks did the trick and he flipped:)

The ultrasound was done at the hospital, so my doctor wasn't there, and the tech didn't say anything about the baby's position at all. I asked her to please send the results to the doctor right away, because I had an appointment the next day and wanted to discuss them. She assured me the doctor would have them, but when I got there the next day, they had yet to be received. At that point, I asked the doc to call me when the results came in. When she did, she said the baby was breech, and we would discuss it at 35 weeks. (This wasn't even my doctor; my practice has you rotate through all the OBs so if someone else is on call when you go into labor, you're not meeting them for the first time.)

Thank you for this advice! I don't think I realized that only ONE position is a no-go if you're not sure the baby is breech. I'll check it out again today. :)

  • My son was breech from 20 weeks until 36 weeks. I went to the chiropractor a few times, did flips under the water in my pool and did all of the spinning baby techniques. The night before my 36 week appt he flipped while doing the inversion technique from spinning babies. You have lots of time so don't panic yet. Good luck!

  • My Dr will not let me deliver breech. If she stays breech I will have c section the week before I am due.

There are a few Drs that will deliver beech but my office will not.

  • I've been getting US every 2 weeks, and now with baby imminent every week.  Since 32 weeks, she has flipped from normal to breech every single US.  There's some point after which they're unlikely to flip on their own, that's when I'd get concerned, your doc should know that.

I'm sure my doc knows that. :) But I haven't met with her since this ultrasound and the subsequent phone call from her associate, who told me I could discuss it with my doc at 35 weeks.

  • I agree with PPs on this. There's definitely enough time for LO to flip on his/her own.

BUT if later in the pregnancy, the baby still hasn't flipped you can look up the Webster Turning Technique. The success rate is amazing. The chiropractor I work for has had a 99% success rate in turning breech babies.
