Trouble TTC

2 Nice Surprises and an Oval-y Ovary

DH on Tuesday night: "Cancel it all! I won't c*m in a cup next week. You are in too much of a rush, we should wait until summer to test!" (After we've waited over 5 years and decided we want the summer for treatments. I just ignored him.)

DH on Wednesday night: "Wake me up at 5:30am tomorrow. I'll come with you to the doctor" (for CD2 US and bloodwork).

First RE consult had been in the afternoon, and I waited forever, it was super busy, and I had no idea what to ask the RE, plus DH didn't come along. It made me a bit nervous about what to expect at this office.

This morning, I fell in love with the office! Their hours are so convenient, and they were extremely considerate of my feelings and worries. The nurse encouraged me to call any time for any reason, and chattered constantly about my ultrasound - what we were looking for, what we could expect later in the month. The office staff were also super friendly, and even the lady taking blood was friendlier than at labs I've gone to before. I think DH only came along so he could scope out the place before his big "command performance" haha, but it was great for him to see the large numbers of men in the waiting room and how normal it all was.

The nurse said my uterus and lining looked perfect, but I am wondering if she really is the one to read the images or if the RE decides the final results? Each ovary had about 8 or more visible immature follicles (from my count of those dark circles, as she didn't mention a number).

One question though: The nurse said my left ovary was "very oval" instead of round, and it did look long and narrow compared to the other (and smaller overall, unless that was just angle of the camera), with 2 lined up rows of follicles along its length. Has anyone else experienced this? I've always thought my O pain was stronger on the right (and more often - like, almost 2:1 ratio of cycles). I was wondering if that could explain why I sometimes O as late as CD21 (giving a follicle on the right time to catch up a second month in a row?) but probably I am just obsessing too much because there's nothing else to think about at this stage.

Re: 2 Nice Surprises and an Oval-y Ovary

  • I went once and my right ovary was squished, it was oblong and skinny. The tech usually has to move it around. My left ovary is closer and it's the one that hurts all the time. I think it's normal to feel 1 more than another because 1 may be dominant.
    Fucking bump!!!!

  • I have no advice for your oval-ovary...

But I am so glad that you had a wonderful experience at your RE's office. My DH recently went to an Open House in honor of NIAW at our future RE (appt is in July). I think that it is safe to say that we both have a man-crush on the RE.

The office was really nice too. I think that the only thing that DH will need to get used to is the fact that he has to do his business in the office in a restroom. The SA's we did with our OB we did at home and then delivered them...

That's awesome that you found an office you really like! I'm struggling with the doctor I have been assigned to by insurance, so always good to know there ARE good REs out there.

  • @pintobean39 thanks for sharing! It sounds like we have a similar experience (just flipped - but then I'm left handed, haha). Has the nurse or RE ever mentioned that it's a sign of something bad for fertility?

@mrsbark711 Thanks so much! LOL about the bathroom. We have to take 3 buses to the office (over an hour) so DH needs to do his thing there as well and it's very frustrating for him. As a consolation I've promised some posing for phone pictures the last time we can BD before the required abstinence before the test, haha!

@jjgrl55 Sorry about your RE troubles. :( Realistically, this may have been more of a euphoria or rosy infatuation this visit, and we'll just have to wait and see if they're really so supportive all along. I think it depends on which nurse/staff we talk to, because I had an awful time scheduling an HSG with one lady, then the next call that lady was so understanding and helpful. Good luck and I hope you find one that is at least very competent and gets results, even if some of that warm manner is lacking!!

@hoping4lo Thank you so much for coming out and telling me that, as scary as it sounds! So...this morning when I saw your message, I first Google Image searched pcos ovaries, and it was like my left ovary was plastered all over the screen. Greeeeaaat. The nurse commented on the first (right), pointed out the immature follicles (which were kind of small, irregular, and blurry, hard to pinpoint or count exactly - definitely chocolate chip cookie). The second, she didn't comment on the follies (or cysts), and I didn't ask, but strand of pearls definitely describes it. Maybe she didn't want to randomly mention such a big thing before the RE could analyze everything for me?

It took me a few stages to acknowledge that that was real...in the shower, I was like, how funny that MY ovary happens to look kind of like a PCOS ovary. Eating breakfast, I was like, well isn't that interesting that I have a PCOS ovary but no PCOS.

Riding to work, I realized, whoa, all those symptoms that I thought came from the steroids I've  been on 2 years might actually be PCOS...30 pound weight gain in a few months mostly on the belly, increasing cholesterol and blood sugar, facial and nipple and belly hair growth, acne (wow makes me sound just gorgeous haha).

And although I've clearly ovulated every time I temp, the temps are a slow rise, often stay just above coverline, and I spot 1-3 days mid-LP plus often up to a week before AF. And LP has fluctuated 10-16 days, O comes from CD 14 to CD 21, and though most cycles are 27-33 days, there's been a couple from 23 up to 36.

I've always kind of ignored anything about PCOS because I was so sure it didn't apply to me, since I always ovulate and am pretty regular. But this is so helpful that you've brought this up so I can research as much as possible for my HSG next week and have a more informed conversation with the RE.

Thank you SO much! (and I guess I am still a little in denial until I get any official news, but hopefully that will help prepare me emotionally if I do have PCOS).

And one silver lining to that - I like an explanation that can be treated. And I was feeling hopeless about IUI because without PCOS as an IF cause, it would give us like 7% chances, but with PCOS as an IF cause, we would be in the group of people who have 15-20% chances (as long as DH can muster enough motile sperm...).

Sounds like my DH a couple months ago....it took forever for him to get in there for an SA!  I have no experience with the oval ovary...I actually think it's interesting that you guys actually know what you're looking at!  I always try to follow along during my u/s but I'm never quite sure what I'm looking at it, and the tech doesn't tell me which I wish she would!
