Is this BH?

I am not a FTM but I don't remember having BH before. My stomach gets hard and it is pretty painful (by no means contractions painful!) but it seems to be hard more on top, not down where menstrual cramps hurt (just to give you an idea of location). Pain and hardness seems to last a long time. Anyone have experience with this? Just wondering what is going on and I don't see my doc again until next week. TIA

Re: Is this BH?

  • I'm also a STM and have no idea how they feel I think I might have them but than women speak of something called "lightening croch" so that threw me off totally. I don't remeber having that either in my previous pregnancy. Sry for no help but I'm so in the same boat lol

  • I'm a FTM but I get that too and am pretty sure they're BH. I wouldn't call it painful, but definitely uncomfortable.

The lightning crotch feeling mentioned, if you're getting that too, might be your cervix dilating/effacing. I've been dealing with that several times per day lasting only a couple seconds each time for the past week or so, and I'm actually making progress (had my first cervical check today).
  • FTM here, but I have had this tightening for a bit now, my stomach gets super hard at night, and it does get a little painful. I also have had cramps for the last week every single day... I have been told it's just my body preparing for birth, obviously I have no idea what labor pain is like, but I hope all this nonsense means she will be here soon. It's so uncomfortable.

I have this as well as cramps. The tightening is BH.. As far as the cramps, doc says it's good, you want that to happen.. It means you're getting closer!
  • FTM here and don't have the answer... But I'll go with BH. I'm having the same issues too - tummy hardens, mainly on top, gets uncomfortable, then goes away. Sometimes feel it in my back too, but nothing crampy/painful.

  • Third time mom and my nurse just explained to me that BH was more of an uncomfortable tightening anywhere, whether it be upper stomach, lower stomach, or both. Mine only happens on top and it just gets tight, not painful, but uncomfortable and it's sometimes hard to breathe.

Sounds like it very well could be BH.

I have been dealing with lightning crotch for weeks, getting progressively worse. My cervix is completely locked down according to the last 2 cervical checks I have had. I dont think lightning crotch has to do with dilation. I think it is more the little one is bumping up against the cervix or nerve.

  • What is lightening crotch?
  • Yes when your stomach gets really hard it's BH. Mine have become more and more uncomfortable as the weeks go on. Now it often makes me feel like i have to go #1 and #2 when i have them. Mine last like 15 minutes sometimes. I learned what I was feeling because I've been having twice weekly non stress tests and the monitor shows any contractions I have while I'm on it. Even after having several a day for many weeks I'm only a fingertip dilated at 39 weeks.
  • This is very informative. I'm also a FTM and I too get a very tightening feeling at the top of my stomach towards the middle. It's so tight at times that I need to lift my shirt up to try anything to relieve the tightness. Also during this time I sometimes feel like I need to poop. So I'm guessing they are BH.

As for lightning crotch I heard that's when the baby strikes a nerve in the cervix and causes shooting pain in the vagina and down the legs. And it can be immobilizing. I haven't experienced that yet.
