Diaper change frequency

Quick question: how often do you change your baby's diaper on average? I know it's not always like clockwork, but is it close to each hour, every two? My little guy has a ferocious diaper rash that won't permanently go away. I am thinking it could be several different things.....not changing him quickly enough is one of them. Also, going up a size might help? We mostly cloth diaper now, but when we get out of the house or for nighttime sleep, it's disposables. He's about reached the limit for #2 diapers. Wondering if that's part of it.

Re: Diaper change frequency

  • I try to change about every 2 hours at home, but at daycare they check/change every hour. Layla had a pretty bad yeast infection as soon as we started food. We ended up getting a script for it. Did you recently start a new food? Could that be causing the diaper rash?

  • I will have to keep in mind the diaper rash when starting foods, but we haven't started food yet. He does have super sensitive skin. The eczema on his face just flared up at the same time. Grrrr.

  • Have you seen the pedi about the rash? Just make sure it's not a yeast infection. We use bag balm when he doesn't have a rash (recommended by pedi and it is great with a mild rash as well) but when he gets one from having diarrhea, which has happened a few times now, we switch immediately to extra strength butt paste. We also do naked play time for him (on lots of towels) to let it air out.

As far as diaper size, we have been switching before G gets to the max weight limit on the box, usually when the diaper seems just a tad snug.

  • Great suggestions. I have been putting coconut oil on his bum, but not after every change. I have been putting a cream on him, but it's not strong enough. I will switch to just coconut oil every time. I already put it on his eczema three times a day. If it doesn't clear up in a day or so I will take him to pedi. Thanks guys! I love the idea of naked time. We did it for a few minutes tonight. I just don't have enough time in the evenings after his bath. Sigh.

  • @CGMB‌ what is Aquaphor? Is it a medicinal cream?

Try using a preventative, like A+D (brown label, not blue) or Aquaphor, they help keep moisture away from the skin. If you're having trouble clearing up the current rash, try coconut oil, I swear by the stuff, just liberally slather it on right before bed, and you should see a drastic improvement by morning.

^^ this. DD has sensitive skin, we We make our own baby wipes out of coconut oil and baby shampoo never looked back. Also use "butt paste" brand ointment. I try to do some naked baby time when possible (I just put the changing pad on the floor and let me roll aroun on it) to air her bottom out.

Every 2 hours during the day unless he's napping. If we're fighting a rash, every hour or as soon as he pees. DS was on antibiotics and got diarrhea from it. That just tore up his little bottom so badly. It was a pitiful looking rash. Even changing him immediately after he went to the bathroom didn't keep it from worsening.

I agree with PPs about using cloth wipes or at least finding a commercial wipe without alcohol; that will only irritate the skin further.

We tried everything: Aquaphor, Desitin, Butt Paste, Bag Balm, Neosporin, Anti-Monkey Butt and probably a lot of others I don't even remember.

Finally one of my nurses at work suggested Citric-Aid Moisture Barrier Cream. It cleared up practically over night. We did put some Desitin on and them the cream over it, but that stuff works miracles. Apparently it's used in the NICU for diaper rash since a lot of babies get irritation from taking antibiotics. It's used in nursing homes also for patients with incontinence. It's not cheap, but we've really stocked up on the stuff after it worked so well, so quickly.

If you have a Kaiser nearby they may have it in the retail area of their pharmacy and you don't have to be a member to make a purchase. We bought some on Amazon.

  • Every 2/3hrs we change our LO. I also do baking soda baths to help with rashes, then apply butt paste or desitin. I swear by baking soda baths!! Just let them sit in the water for about 5 minutes. I've noticed it goes away within a day or 2. Hope it clears up soon!
  • We change every couple hours probably. LO got his first rash the other day when I tried using disposables. I used butt paste on it but after 2-3 days it became apparent he then had a yeast rash.(red splotches) I used clotrimazole to kick it.  It took several days to fully disappear.
  • We change every 2-3 hours and she wears the same diaper all night. I am another coconut oil fan, it has helped clear up any rash we have come across. With CDing be careful what rash creams you are using, most of them are bad for CDs. If you aren't sure if it is CD friendly just use a disposable just in case. And what type of laundry detergent are you using and what do you do for a wash cycle? If the detergent isn't getting rinsed out of the diapers well enough or has some additive in it or your diapers aren't getting clean enough, those can also cause rashes. Good luck!

@Dreamingmommy4‌ I have only been using cloth diapers for three or four weeks. I have been using Ecos (coconut oil base), which is okay, but not great for cloth diapering. I just got Charlie's in the mail today, so switching to that. I do a rinse first, then a wash on the hot/cold setting. I dry on normal. We have just been using coconut oil, and giving him a bath every day instead of every other. I also went up a size in disposables. All these changes are really helping! Oh, and I change his diaper every hour or hour and a half, so he's not sitting in a wet diaper too long. Of course, we change poopy ones immediately. All of these suggestions are really great. Thank you, everybody. :)

@Dreamingmommy4 may be onto something; it could be that the diapers have detergent left over. When i wash i do a rinse and spin; heavy wash/hot no spin; then a rinse and spin again. Hopefully you can find something that works. Good Luck!

I will start adding the extra rinse and spin at the end. I have heard other ladies say they do as well. It's just so hard to justify using all that water on one load.

  • Every 2 hours or so.  Daycare does every two hours.  We had some wicked diaper rash a couple weeks ago so I am still putting destin or A&D on him when I change him.
  • Sorry, I've only lurked this board. But I saw your into on the cd board. Those ladies would have some great advice for you. I would like to say I recently battled my first diaper rash. You should try to change cloth as soon as you notice it's wet especially when your battling rash. Most commercially available diaper creams are not cd safe. But you may be able to find waxalene or cj's butter. If your in Austin you could hit up baby earth, they should have a good supply of cd safe creams. Also, a baking soda bath can cool a rash. I went back and forth between cloth and sposies so I could use desatin on her rash. I also cut up receiving blankets to cover the whole indies of my cloth diapers and went ahead and used non cd safe stuff, I don't think it hurt my diapers. If you can find California baby diaper area spray use it.. It took careof the last bit of rash quickly. Naked baby time as much as possible. Hope some of this helps.

I'm every 2-3 hours but at daycare they change every hour.
  • @countrycotton‌ Great advice! I have been to Baby Earth. I remember their cd collections. Next time I am in Round Rock I will stop in. I also happen to use California Baby wash, so thank you for the spray recommendation. Miracle Mist is helping a ton too. I used that with my first, and it's awesome. His rash is looking so much better, but still not gone. I am doing the baking soda bath tonight.

  • Just to let you know baby earth offers same day delivery in the Austin area. I hit up their web site all the time and noticed this a while back. Though I don't know what they charge, but depending on where you are it may be cheaper than the gas and would defiantly cut down on those impulse buys.

Does the rash flare up when you use disposables? Or with cloth?

If it's with disposables, I'd ditch that brand and try another.

If it's with cloth, watch your water when you do you're last rinse. If it has bubbles the detergent hasn't been cleaned out completely and could be building up. It also might be a sensitivity to the detergent.

It could also be yeast. In that case you want to get to the doctor and have them prescribe medication and treat your diapers to kill the yeast.

Otherwise try some naked time and make sure you dry the area really good during diaper changes.

I'm not sure if it's cloth or disposable to tell the truth. I started using cloth diapers and pampers overnight disposables at the same time. I am about to switch to cloth at night too, so I will know that answer soon. Are there a lot of baby's that get rashes with cloth? I didn't have issues prior to using these two kinds of diapers. Before, I was just using Whole Foods brand disposables, with no issues.

  • I agree with lots of naked time! Airing DD out seems to really help, and it makes her happy! We change DD every 2-3 hours. She is in the same diaper all night.

Did it come on all of a sudden? DD got a very bad, bright red diaper rash about a week ago and it was there no matter what we did. Then she cut her first tooth and it's gone. MIL said that her kids would always get diaper rash when they were teething.

Other then that we slather on the Sudocream and it usually clears up in a day.

What detergent are you using? And how much.

    What is your wash routine?

What kind of washer are you using (front loader he?)

For instance, I use Nellies. I have an old fashion top loader. I use 2 Tblsp of detergent and do a rinse warm, wash hot/cold with an extra rinse.
