Let's talk about poo

Ok, I'm a little worried after seeing some stuff on our dear friend Dr. google! But what's a "normal" FF poo... I'm a FTM and his poo just worries me. TMI I know, but it's a really dark green and contain some yellow in it. He takes Similac Advance Omega-3, my mother in law even said that Doctors don't recommend Omega-3 to newborns but when I visited my family doctor he said nothing, even said he's a big baby and his night feedings should be water (after a while he won't wake up during the night for feedings) which I thought was really weird. So any advice?

  • We FF and LOs poop is dark green and kind of seedy. Our pedi said she's more concerned with consistency and it should be really really soft.

  • I'm EBF so probably completely ignorant... But I didn't think babies should be given just water until 6+ months??
  • ^^agree. Their hydration comes from the water in the formula. Unless your LO is showing signs of dehydration I would think no additional water, especially plain, is necessary. I'm not a doc though so who knows?!

  • FF here and her poop is greenish/yellowish. Asked pedi and she said it was fine. (Although I read it "should" be a brown consistency for ff babies) also, LO only poops once a day, which I'm concerned about, but my pedi isn't. DD1 pooped so much more, but was BF and supplemented so I don't know. What they 'say' is true-every baby is different.
  • Water is not good for babies straight up

My baby is FF (gentlease) and her poops are dark green and yellow. Except her poops are a bit firm. I asked my pedi about it Monday and she said that as long as baby isn't in pain or struggling when pooping that she isn't concerned. But your pedi said it should be really really soft? Ugh. Inconsistency like this kills me

  • No water until a year. They should fill up on and get their fluids from breast milk or formula. Green/yellow poop is fine and normal
  • Since we're talking poo I want to share Colton had a Dorito orange color tonight, he is ebf. I wonder what I ate to make his poo that color?!
  • LO is ff and her poo ranges from yellowish and seedy to dark green and a tad runny p

We get anywhere from yellow and watery to Doritos orange and thicker for lack of a better adjective.
  • Sloan is FF - on gentlease. Color dark green or pasty yellow. We also give 1/2 oz prune juice every other day to help her gas so her stools are always runny
  • J is ff and like others his poop ranges from dark green and runny to medium green and soft to yellow and seedy. I looked at the enfamil and similac websites and they both say this range is normal for ff babies.

I highly doubt Similac would be putting omega3 in formula if it wasn't recommended for newborns. Prenatal vitamins have it. I'm pretty sure enfamil newborn has DHA (which I'm pretty sure is an omega-3).

And please get a pedi. Babies shouldn't have water. If he's waking up at night it's because he's hungry.

Did I read that right? Your doctor, a DOCTOR, suggested water as your MOTF?
Sorry to break it to you, but it's time for a new doctor OR time for your doctor to share his extensive research on giving a newborn water!  You need a pediatrician for your babe.  Not a family doctor who apparently is offering up very outdated advice.
As for Omega3, it's in the formula. It's fine.  You baby's poop may be anwayere from yellow/orange to green/brown, somehwat seedy or pasty and that's all normal!

Yeah he's an older doctor and his clinic basically sees older patients.. We're trying our best to get a new family doctor for LO and I but the waiting list for one can take years,... And thank you ladies for the input :)

  • Our doctor always told us there are so many variations and that anything in the yellow/green family seedy, liquidy, is normal..here's what similac says.. https://m.similac.com/feeding-expert/diaper-decoder#bmb=1 and a chart from google! I think you're doing ok! (Btw my 1st ds was really big like 18lb by 12wks and we never did water feeds.. He started sleeping through on his own at 8wks..)

  • Hey, I love our family doc! He sees all three of us now and he's great. No wacky advice about water. I think it's just fine for babies to see a generalist instead of a pedi as long as it's a GOOD generalist.....

^^Agreed. We see a family doctor because there are very few pediatricians in my area and they really didn't have good reviews. I've loved our doc so far. I was reassured of my choice when Owen was in the hospital with RSV. The pediatrician barely looked at him and was willing to let him go weeks before following up with our doctor.

Sorry to get off-topic :). I was going to suggest the diaper decoder page as well but a pp already posted it for you. Sounds pretty normal!
