What do you do with your awake babies?

My little ones are just over 4 weeks now and are awake more and more. I try to sing, dance, read, hold them, go on walks, play on activity mat and do tummy time but I feel like they need more stimulation than that. What do you do with your babies when they are awake?

  • I do exactly what you're doing. Sounds like you're doing great. :)

I'm doing what you're doing. And I feel the same way like she needs more.

  • Same as you. And also feeling the Same way
  • I'm doing the same things but I feel the same way. I also feel super guilty if I put her in her mamaroo (swing type thing) while she's awake so I can get something done. I feel like I need to be doing something with her 100% of the time that she's awake.
    Should I be??
  • My son loves to lay under the activity mat we bought for him. Just has a few dangling animals but it keeps him intrigued for a good 45 min. I also play some music for him while we play w the activity mat.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. You don't want to overstimulate them as someone said above.
  • I'm doing the same stuff.

Hope this isnt a post hijack but my piggy back question is how long are you spending doing these activities? Sometimes after feeding and changing it may only be 5 or 10 minutes before he's giving sleep cues. Wondering if y'all are experiencing the same.

It's good for them to have their own quiet, awake time to process and make connections.  Don't try to fill every waking second with activity.

Thank goodness. I always feel like I need to stimulate them when they are awake. This is such a relief because it's honestly impossible to keep both babies entertained 100% (or even 70%) of their wakeful hours.

I also read this. They are totally fine alone if they are looking around and are quiet. If they start fussing they are bored and need stimulation.

But I am the same as you. I don't want my kiddos to be behind the curve because I couldn't get my shit together!

  • Oh wow! I guess I did all this stuff with my first son but now I basically just try to protect my newborn from being accosted by my 2.5 year old! We are always singing and playing and doing things so hopefully that's enough stimulation!

  • My favorite thing to do with DS when he is awake (since we are still at the hospital with no books or toys) is to pull him close and make faces at him. I seriously do this for at least 30 min a day. :)

Ha ha, this is our situation too! I just try to keep him from being either hit or smothered in kisses by his brother. Most of the time he hangs out in the bouncer or the carrier while we go about our day.
