Update 3: Kidney issues :-(

Update 3 and final! I hope!
First of all...thank you A14 for the support and prayers! It seems so silly that a simple post to a website can be so helpful but it is just knowing its out there.

She has started wetting regularly and even owed all over my husband. Ha!! Probably well deserved! I've never been so proud of pee in my life. Thanks to this and a very successful experience with an OT lactaction consultant, we are on our way to being a successful breast feeding team. I learned that nipple shields can be your friend! Its ok to pump at 5 days pp if needed to make sure your LO is getting their needs met. I am making milk! And it won't all be in for another week and a half. She ate from my most engorged breast for 7 minutes and got 1.5 oz. thank you weighted feeding! This whole experience was worth it.

Thank you a14 for letting me share my experience and feel supported. Y'all are awesome!!

Update 2: so luckily the protein in her kidneys should resolve itself. That is wonderful news! Bad news is it is breastfeeding or unknown lack of it appears to be the culprit for her lack of wet diapers. My milk is just coming in. I pumped tonight and one side was great and the other needed an industrial strength vacuum to get anything out. My poor baby has been starving. She has had formula and is sleeping sprawled out on her back like she's never been relaxed before. And she has this giant IV in her little arm. I know its not my "fault" but its my fault if that makes sense. I am also mad that the hospital sent her home knowing there was only one wet diaper. It just seems like it was obvious we would end up here.

Thank you all for the comments and prayers. Keep them coming please because even though she's had all this fluid, she still hasn't had a wet diaper. I'm hoping it will just take a little time.

Update: heading to Childrens Hospital for admission. And in a soul crushing twist the LC from the hospital happened to just call to check in and told me her problem is due my poor latch and her inability to get proper nourishment. The latch they sent me home with. I'm dying inside. And DH is on board now. He was just upset about her having to go through any of this. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers!!

Send us some prayers please! My 4 day old has only had one wet diaper each day. We went to the pedi today and had to start supplementing, have a kidney US a d now she needs bloodwork because there was some kind of protein that my pedi had never heard of. She consulted with the urologists at Children's Hospital and they are concerned. My husband is also not helping because he was so upset with her reaction to the exam and US that he really doesn't want her to go through this. Its so frustrating. I keep trying to explain that she can get sick very quickly and needs this. We are going in a minute but there is a lot of tension. Ant positive thoughts you can spare would be great.

  • That lc can suck an egg. A poor latch does not cause kidney problems, for crying out loud.

Do NOT listen to that LC. Do not. I'm sorry she said those things, that was incredibly uncalled for. Remember: she is not a doctor, she's armchair diagnosing your baby based on absolutely nothing.

  • big, big hugs to you, mama.  my soul would be crushed too at the news that my baby wasn't getting enough to eat :(  talk about the worst thing a hard-working mother could possibly hear...  i feel you on that one, i really do.  i'm so sorry.  i hope your time at the hospital is productive and restorative (physically for her, emotionally for you) and you come home feeling encouraged, healthy, well supported and confident.
  • I am so sorry. I hope that they can find out what's going on and get your baby well.

  • Sending positive thoughts and vibes to you and your baby girl! I hope everything checks out quickly and you can all return home soon. I would slap the LC through the phone for you if I could. NOT cool. :-(

Glad to hear things are improving. We had DD1 in the hospital at 7w- it is so heartbreaking to see them with IVs in their tiny bodies. I hope she has a big wet soon and you can start relaxing too.

  • I'm picturing your baby girl sprawled out and it brings a huge smile to my face. She must be very content. Don't beat yourself up. You're a great mom for being aware of the number if wet diapers and knowing to say something!
I hope she has the biggest wet diaper for you soon (with lots more to follow)!
  • Praying for you and your sweet girl tonight. I hope wet diapers are on the way. Sorry you have to go through this. You are a good mom. Do not let this discourage you. You have done everything you are able to do, and seeking help for your little one is what needed to be done. Your A14 family is here for you

  • When DD was 4 days old, she was admitted for jaundice. She hadn't been having wet diapers, and when she was they were mostly red crystals. My milk was just coming in, but DD had tongue tie and had issues latching.

One of the nurses told me if I had been feeding her every two hours, she wouldn't have jaundice. I was feeding her, or at least doing my best. You can't help when your milk comes in. I remember feeling awful and sobbing. The moral: it's not your fault, but I understand how you feel.

I'm glad that the issue will resolve itself, I hope it does so quickly. It shows how good of a mom you are that you were on top of it.
  • You poor thing. Don't beat yourself up. You are doing your best. The difficulty of BFing (well, one of them) is that you don't know how much your baby is getting. It sounds like your LO is on her way to getting better, which is really the only thing that matters. Whether she gets formula or BM, she is getting the nutrition she needs. It sounds like it is good you took her in when you did.

  • I'm glad your little girl is doing better! Hopefully everything will right itself quickly. Please don't blame yourself, this is definitely not your fault!

  • I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I'm glad you are getting care for her though. It sucks! This isn't your fault, what can be attributed to you, though, is that you got care for your baby when she needed it!
