Hi, im the same, i think im going to go back on 18hrs so one shift one week and 2 the next with a mix of days and nights. Im luck as my mum will help one day but we r going to have to use a nursery the next which is expensive but what can u do. Plus ill do bank work proberly friday nights as we wont need extra child care as hubby will b home. Its so hard though.
I currently work 4 12s, but when LO gets here I'll quit my prn. My plan is to have DH take her to daycare on his way to work, then if I work the next night I'll sleep til 3 then go get her, if I'm off that night I'll go get her by noonish. I'm going to try not to work more than 2 in a row so we don't need but 16 hours or so a week.
Can you cut to 24 hours? When DS was born, I went from 40 hours (2 weeks 36 hours, 1 week 48 every 3 weeks ) to two 12 hour shifts. Before my mom was laid off and agreed to watch DS for us ( happened before my mat leave ended so we were covered). I looked around at a few child care places and it was astronomical for infant care. We lived in a suburb right outside of Boston and it was $700 a week for infant care, in by 630 am snd out by 630 pm. They wouldn't do just 3 or 4 days either. Many if the places had hours like that. Could your DH do a drop off and pick up? It's never guaranteed we will get out at 730 pm. So happily my mom agreed to watch DS and has been 2 days a week since. My husband is home in the mornings and my mom stays until one of us gets home (DH works 5 days a week). Do you have rotating shifts or straight days or nights? That will make a difference too. The other girls I work with either have my situation where family watches the kids, or they switched to permanent nights and just get an on home baby sitter for 5-6 hours in the morning and early afternoon so they can sleep. When I do two 12's, it's never in a row unless it's my weekend on (then DH is with DS). It was better for my milk supply in the beginning and better for us know because DS knows I just work one day then I'm off for a few.
Nurse here! I work 3 12's, never all in a row. I can't be of help I don't think because MH is also a nurse working 3 12's. We work 2 days the same and 1 day different. So we only need child care twice a week and still have 3 days a week off together. The 2 days we both work, the kids go to my in laws who are both retired and live 1 mile away from us. Still, I wish everyday I could go to part time and just do 2 12's a week! Not happening though!
I'm thinking I will go to nights indefinitely(which I don't mind for differential purposes), and work maybe a Sunday where my SO is off, and will drop LO off in the morning for care, and I can pickup the same afternoon after sleeping. And then either work every weekend or something.
I'm just so used to working my 3/12's and having my 8 days off in a row. I just don't see how I can not see my baby for three days in a row though. My schedule was great when it was just me.
I'm cutting back to PRN and will see how it goes from there. A daycare close to me charges significantly less for two days per week. Could you work two during the week and one shift every weekend to only pay for two days?? If we use daycare the hub will obviously have to take there in the am and pick up cause most of the time I don't get close to home until after 830p. The daycare meant for hospital employees next door to work closes at 730 so that does me no good. Good luck!
I work three 12s.. my schedule is the same and just repeats every 6 weeks.. im spoiled rotten in that my mom watches my kids when husband and I are working. .
@c&bmama0911 yes you are spoiled! I was trying to hoax my mom this morning into practicing going to work early so she could adjust her schedule to be off one day weekly instead of every other week!
Nurse here! But work in the OR... So I wok 630-3 Monday through Friday then rotating call. Once this LO is born my kiddos will stay at home with me and then I'll be paying my parents to watch the kiddos when I go back. With daycare it was going to go up to 1240 a month for 3, from 880 for two. We just can't afford that... So I'll pay my parents health insurance which will be 650-700 a month. So it's a win win for me
I work night shift, 3 random nights a week and every other weekend, but after baby I plan on going back flex (day shift) while I search for a PNP job, which will hopefully be part time. Good luck!
I cut back to 48 hrs pp and worked every Friday and every other weekend, 12 hour shifts, plus call time at night. That left us needing only one day of care per week (that Friday), which we got a nanny for.

My plan is to only work the weekends so we don't have to pay for daycare once the baby is here. My bf is also a nurse so he's going to work more to balance things out...thats the plan anyway...but we all know that can change.
