NBR: Wedding Gift for Sister

Hi all,

My sister is getting married next month, having moved up her (small, immediate family only) wedding from September on account of my pregnancy.  I really want to get her and her fiance a meaningful wedding gift.  What kind of great wedding gifts have you given or received?

The only thing I have thought of so far would be some kind of plaque or artwork with their name on it.  I guess I'm looking for something they can display and/or use in the long term.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hmm...how much are you looking to spend?

You could pay for an engagement photo shoot, or if they're planning one already, purchase and frame one of the best photos from the shoot for them.

In a similar vein, you could frame their marriage certificate for them.

Something monogrammed that is his+hers makes a nice gift.

i absolutely love food so the very best and thoughtful gift we received was from my college roommate.  she gave us a $100 gift cert to a fancy/expensive restaurant that we were planning on going to in NYC on our honeymoon.  she even went to the trouble of finding out what day we wanted to go and making the reservation for us.  the restaurant knew it was our honeymoon so they put a few extra flourishes into our dining experience.  while the certificate did not cover the entire bill (did i mention the restaurant was expensive? ha ha!)  it was just so perfect for us and the meal was absolutely delicious!

edit: whoops, just saw you were looking for something lasting that could be displayed... ah well.  hope my story inspires some others shopping for wedding gifts :)

My favorite gift was likely one of the least expensive.  It is a sign that says our last name on it in big block letters and in a script font on the top and bottom it says "this family established 2004"

It was from Uppercase Living I think...I love it so much!  We can (but haven't) add hanging signs below it with our kids' names.  By far, the one gift I love the most.

ETA: it is on this background...just so you get an idea of what it looks like.

  • Do they already have champagne flutes for the reception? I know it's a small family-only thing, but I'm assuming there will be some sort of dinner after and a toast :) My MIL gifted us some beautiful flutes and DH and I use them on our anniversaries and other romantic occasions like V-day. They bring back such wonderful memories of our wedding day.

Oh that's a good idea!  We have a pair of champagne flutes that BB&B puts on your registry automatically and I just left on there, and my friend ended up buying them for us.  We have them on display and use them to toast anniversaries and other special occasions.

I am also going to try and get tickets for a show I think they would like, I just can't count on it because I know they're going to sell out quickly.

@bazingabee  I hear you on the artwork.  We got a very strange bowl/piece of art from my MIL's friends for our wedding...we have never even met them (they couldn't make the wedding) so we never had to worry about displaying it.

One of the best and most memorable gifts we received and I have since given to almost all of my friends whom have gotten married recently is a glash baking dish that has our names engraved in it. Ours says "from the kitchen of...has our names". For one friend I had one made that said "The Coles" Est. and their wedding date. Others I have done similar to ours.

Def unique and I use it all the time!

Another idea - couples massage for some place near there house. My husband used ours on our 1st anniversary. Was nice to go do something together a year after our wedding. Or if they are going on a honeymoon, you could get them a message, dinner, etc if they offer those things where they are staying.
Look out baby #3 is on his/her way!

  • Do you know if she cooks at all? You can make her a nice family/friends cookbook with recipe contributions from everyone. There are a lot of sites out there where you can even add pictures, anecdotes, and of course all the recipes in a really nice bound book.

  • We received a beautiful cutting board with our names and wedding dates engraved into it.  We're going to do it for my BIL's wedding and include a restaurant gift certificate for a nice restaurant in town.

  • One of my favorite wedding gifts, which was so simple, is a framed wedding invitation. I ended up buying a similar frame and did our program and the handkerchief I had embroidered with our wedding date and my new initials. I have the three frames hanging above our chest of drawers in our bedroom.

One of the things that I bought for us that I loved was a self-inking stamp with our names and address on it.  Made doing the thank-yous that much easier.

Also, I got a really sweet gift from a girl who made us a Christmas ornament.  She shredded our invitation and stuck it into a clear ball with some pretty ribbon.  It was simple but so sweet.
