I am an avid coffee lover. I have worked at like, 4 coffee shops, I love the stuff, can't live without it, can't function without it.....except when I'm pregnant. It makes me nauseous. :(
*Said goodbye to our angel baby July 30. 2014. only had him for 21 weeks in my belly, missing him every day*

  • I gave up coffee cold turkey until I was about 11 weeks, then I caved and had a cup one morning. I couldn't believe how much better I felt at work! I had energy again, I was in a peppy mood...so I decided on mornings where I feel particularly groggy, that I would allow myself a cup.

But what began as having a few cups per week is now leaning dangerously towards a cup per day. My BFF (who is pregnant with her third), has one cup per day and says it's fine, but I can't help feeling guilty. My nurse also told me it's ok and actually suggested I go ahead and indulge because it will keep the headaches at bay (and it does). Another friend of mine quit coffee/caffeine cold turkey for her ENTIRE pregnancy! I wish I had that willpower.
  • I switched to decaf in the 2WW and have 1-2 cups of decaf each morning. I know it technically has a little caffeine, so it's enough to trick my brain (and my digestive system) into thinking it's getting the real thing.

  • I have never been much of a coffee drinker - more of a tea person myself.  However, I am really missing it when I have late nights (i.e., meetings that run until 9 p.m.) -- it was the only thing that both kept me awake and suppressed my appetite so I could wait for dinner until I got home.

I gave up caffeine altogether - at least for now. :)  After my BFP I had a single cup of green tea and it gave me the queasies.  So I figured it was best to just avoid it.

  • I love my coffee but while preg I went from having 3 cups pre- preg to only 1 cup in the am. I'm literally nauseous until I drink it. Then I feel great and I'm not constipated!
  • I gave up all caffeine this entire pregnancy. Only thing I've had is whatever is in chocolate.... Can't give up that. I cannot wait for a Dr. Pepper. I already scouted the vending machine at the hospital to make sure they carry it.

  • I didn't drink any coffee at all during the first trimester. Now, I drink a half cup of regular (4-6 oz.) or a full cup of decaf in the morning.

When not pregnant, I usually have about 2 cups of regular.

Green, black and white tea (even decaf) can inhibit folic acid absorption, so it's good that your body told you to stay away. I haven't had green tea in almost two years since ttc, and I used to drink at least a cup a day.

I drink rooibos now when I want tea (naturally caffeine free and it doesn't have the antioxidant that interferes with folic acid).

  • Not a huge coffee fan, but I do like a vanilla latte or a frappuccino every once in a while.  Mostly I just want my grande chai latte.

  • I love coffee! I used to be a barista. I drink a couple cups a day. When I was pregnant with DS, I had an aversion to it though. I was so worried that I would never like it again, but that all changed once he was born :)

  • I LOVE coffee, used to drink 3-4 cups per day. In my first pregnancy I quit cold turkey and was drinking decaf tea all day long, because I think I was not satisfying my craving. After my m/c I cut down to 1 cup per day, and when I found out I was pregnant, I switched to having a little less than 8oz (very small cup!). It satisfies my craving. Some mornings I don't feel like it, so I don't bother. But I feel like it's better to have my one little cup, than to be craving something all day long!

  • @2redtulips, I have avoided green tea too because my pregnancy book told me it inhibits folic acid. When I did a little bit of research, I found that you would have to drink mass amounts to actually have an effect on folic acid absorption. I avoid it anyways, but just a tidbit!

  • I have a cup of decaf every other day (ie when the mood strikes), and will treat myself to a full blown latte (ie not decaf) at home maybe once a weekend... I don't need it energy-wise, I just enjoy the taste and comfort :)

Good to know. I was just totally freaked out about it because DH was born with mild spina bifida and my sister lost a baby mid-term to it. I wasn't taking any chances. (Our spina bifida test came back negative - phew!)
