My ultrasound showed a mass on my bladder :(

I had an ultrasound yesterday (13 weeks) and the baby is fine, but they found a mass on my bladder. They are unsure what it is. My midwife has lined up an appointment with an urologist for Monday to get a biopsy done through my urethra.(Thankful they were able to get me in so quickly.) I am having a minor freak out cause I have never had any kind of operative procedures done.

Has anyone had a procedure like this done and can talk me through what I can expect when I walk into the doctors office.

Re: My ultrasound showed a mass on my bladder :(

  • I've never had this done but I wanted to say that I'm sorry you have to go through this :( T&Ps
  • No idea about the procedure. But I am sure they will do their best to make you comfortable.

I am glad you are getting this taken care of!  It is good the US caught it.

I take care of patients that get this procedure. It is pretty quick and you don't have pain afterwards. Thoughts and prayers!

  • @mbredin‌ that's good to hear.

@jessa1228‌ I was quite shocked as well.

  • I haven't had that particular procedure done, but I had a scan of my bladder done with a camera that was put up through my urethra (it's called a cystoscopy).  I'm not sure how close the two procedures are (I didn't have any tissue removed), but the procedure wasn't too bad.  It was a little uncomfortable and definitely a bit strange, but certainly not awful.  I think the worst part was when they made me pee after the procedure, the first couple of times urinating stung quite a bit.
    Good Luck!

  • @It6720 I can't remember what they called the procedure. But it sounds similar. Were you numbed at all?
  • I hope if you have to have a procedure it will be simple and easy to recover from.  Good thing for ultrasounds - that would have sucked if you had gone on not knowing about it and it turned into something worse.

  • I have a 7 cm cyst on my ovary. No fun. Have to go to a specialist to make sure it's benign. Then Dr is going to take it out when baby is born. I had the same with DD so he is probably going to take my whole ovary....I feel your psi . Good luck.

  • @Kristillarson I just looked up the Wikipedia page and it looks like they can do a biopsy during cystoscopy.  So I would bet you'll have the same procedure I did, just with an extra step.
They did do a local anesthetic so that it wouldn't hurt when they inserted the scope.  Once the scope was in place, they filled my bladder up with saline so that the doctor could see the inside of my bladder.  As I said, this was a bit uncomfortable, but not painful, just a really weird sensation.  FX that all goes well for you!

I also had the procedure with just a camera, no biopsy.  It was quite a few years ago.  They used a local anesthetic, and really it wasn't bad at all.  I was surprised how easy it really was, and I got to watch the screen which I thought was cool.  I drove myself home and don't recall having any pain after other than the slight burning the first couple times I peed.

Edit:  Of course I need to add - Good luck!

  • @CocoGelato‌ I was wondering if I was going to be able to drive myself home afterwards. Thanks for sharing.
