Trying to Get Pregnant

negative HPT at 12 dpo

My husband and I just started trying to conceive, and I took two tests, both negative.  First one I know was way to early to tel, the second was at 12 dpo.  My cycles are normally 31 days.   Im having a TON of abdominal bloating, which does not normally happen to me before a period.  Also having bachache, dizziness, fatigue (although fatigue is not new for me).  My poor hubby is convinced that im pregnant, but we were both so dissapointed when the 12 dpo test was negative.  Has anyone here been negative at 12 dpo and wound up being pregnant?

Re: negative HPT at 12 dpo

  • Oh boy.....

If you're testing and it's negative, then you're not pregnant... at this time.

I encourage you to read the newbie blog located in the post at the top of the board. Good luck!

Someone somewhere probably has.  But their experience doesn't affect your results.

To echo @jefa621, are you charting?  Are you sure of your O date?

I am negative every single 12 DPO, and still not pregnant.

I was going to try being positive but overly positive people annoy me!

Use a FRER if you're not convinced. At 12 dpo you'll get a definitive answer.

  • I had a lot of random symptoms that I don't normally get this past cycle but since I was testing negative at 10, 11, and 12 DPO, I counted myself out and said no more testing. I got my period two days later. If you used a FRER at 12 DPO, then you are likely not pregnant.

@CLECyclist‌ - Very true. I'm just assuming anyone who proclaims dpo with such confidence MUST be charting. Silly me.

  • Not me  - at 12DPO always turned out to be a negative. Sorry.

Also just because your cycle is normally 31 days doesn't mean you won't ever have a wonky one where you o late. That will push your period back, but you technically wouldn't be late. So unless you are temping a actually know your 12dpo,any scenario could still be possible.
All of this.  Plus, "symptoms" change for me often.  I might have bloating one month and not another.  As others have said, when TTC you start noticing everything.  Good luck and I recommend temping and charting if you aren't already.  It takes a lot of the guess work out of TTC.

  • yeah i'm charting, i switched charting apps and am not sure how to post it.  I honestly do not think I'm pregnant, was just wondering about the accuracy of the HPTs at certain days post ovulation.
  • Yes i just saw, thank you

  • If someone told you a success story of getting a negative HPT before getting a positive it might give you hope for a few days. It won't help you though. We don't give false hope here. Encouraging someone to believe they are pregnant when a HPT test is negative is cruel. I know you want us to tell you that you still have a chance this cycle and you might, but that isn't fair to you. Someone else's experience and fertility has no effect on your own. I am sorry but a negative means not pregnant that this time.
This, times a million. I have been in that eager place where you really want to be pregnant, but any internet story you read (even if it sounds just like you!) is by no means proof of your pregnancy. Do yourself a mental favor and do not seek out these sort of answers while you are ttc. It will only cause you unnecessary stress and heartache.

Thank you so much!!!  That is exactly what I was looking for.  Your post is very helpful, was just curious.  Again, I doubt that I am pregnant, and I am absoultely positive that I am over analyzing every little symptom, lol. Just was curious about the tests and how accurate they are at various points.  Thank you so much.
I like you.  You seem rational.  Stick around :-)
Haha, i don't know about rational, trying to be anyways...  TTC is totally messing with my head.  My poor husband is so hopeful, and I'm trying to keep expectations down.  But there is always next month if I'm not, not really i any rush I suppose.
  • @karissaRN‌, I agree with Joy. You should stick around. There is a lot of knowledgable people here and great resources. If you decide to stay, I would recommend you read the Newbie Blog, we recommend it to new people. It has information about TTC and about this board. https://tbttgp.wordpress.com TTC can be frustrating so we have daily threads, the 'Waiting to Ovulation' (W2O) and the 'Two Week Wait' (TWW). Feel free to join those threads and get a feel for the board. Good luck.
thank you, you've been very helpful!   And thank you for not making me feel stupid, I'm so new to this.  I appreciate it.

I understand.  Within a few days after confirming ovulation through temping, DH starts asking, "Do you think you're pregnant? When do you start testing?"  Then several days later, "Have you peed on any sticks yet? I bet you're pregnant!"  Through all of this, he'll randomly pat my stomach as I walk by and smile.  Just yesterday he asked about testing, and I told him I'd test this morning.  I woke up to my period today, so when he got up, I immediately told him that I had my period and we're starting Cycle 5.

He hopeful and he means well, which I like, but at the same time, it's annoying when he says, "I bet you're pregnant!" and I have to say, "Well, maybe, but there's a large chance I'm not, so..."

If this is truly what you wanted to know you could have googled it much easier than asking for opinions and feedback on a message board.

  • When I was ttc my 1st, I remember people saying "if you are pregnant enough to have symptoms, you are pregnant enough for a +hpt."  That was pretty accurate for me.

FWIW, I had a TON of phantom symptoms my first month ttc and I was not pregnant.  I was shocked bc I had convinced myself I had nausea, sore boobs, hot flashes, etc.  The next month I felt nothing at all and guess what? I was knocked up.

Good luck and hang in there.  TTC can be a total rollercoaster.
