Article on Twin Pregnancies Research

This article makes me sort of angry.  Granted, any research to help out very complicated twin pregnancies is a good thing.  But I have 2 issues with it:
1) I was a parade float and still had preterm labor 26 weeks and delivered at 34.
2) Progesterone kept me pregnant for 8 weeks.  Why state there is no proof it works - there is no proof it doesn't work so why take away that hope/chance from people.

Just had to vent.

Re: Article on Twin Pregnancies Research

  • I gained all my weight in the 3rd trimester and was induced at 38w.

I agree with you for your #2 comment. I didn't need it but why would you take that hope away from women. What if women start refusing it because "it doesn't work"?

As for #1 I am sure you weren't a parade float!!

  • Research that doesn't reflect your experience isn't necessarily bad research. That said, this study is defining preterm birth as babies who are born before 32 weeks. (Although we know that technically the definition of preterm is <37 weeks, I bet the actual journal article does a better job of defining the cutoff and why they chose it - these details tend to get muddied when the lay media picks them up.) Anyway, I was just going to say that your experience of weight gain plus babies born at 34 weeks matches what the study found.

I was also given progesterone in my 3rd tri - My MFM acknowledged that there was no proof it prevented preterm labor with twins but he said it might help and can't hurt. As long as it remains inexpensive and easy to administer I bet MOMs will continue taking it.

  • I am just going to start my progesterone shots and I'm 19 weeks. The doctor told me that it doesn't hurt but may not prevent but doesn't hurt to try. Any hope for someone who has had 5 miscarriages is important.
  • Interesting to hear… I wonder how good/valid the research is.  Certainly wasn't me.. when I delivered at 30 weeks I had gained close to 60lbs.  I did not have progesterone but I had heard there was no research proving it works.

Seriously - If it can't hurt, why not try everything!  I wonder....shots vs. suppositories?  I was on the progesterone inserts, not shots.

Has progesterone been shown to be ineffective or has it not been thoroughly studied in multiple pregnancies? I thought my MFM had said it just wasn't adequately studied yet when I got it.
  • What made me angry was that I had 2 different OBs suggest that I should only gain 20 pounds during my twin pregnancy....30 at the MOST.  During my first singleton pregnancy I gained 20 lbs and lost it within a month, so what my dr. had recommended, just didn't seem right.  When I was later referred to an MFM, he gave me guidelines that directly conflicted with my OB.  I ended up having babies that weighed 7lbs 2oz and 8lbs 7oz...so over 15lbs of baby plus an extra placenta and fluid.  It would have been futile to try to stick to the original recommendation of 20lbs.

I hope that this research will start some dialogue toward more standard recommendations for MoMs.  It was interesting to see how divergent the recommendations were even within the same medical practice.

I had my first son at 34 weeks, my second son at 32 weeks and the twins at 36 1/2 weeks.... the only time I was on progesterone shots was with the twins...so I think that stuff DEFINETLY works, at least it did for me. My doc didn't think I would make it past 32 weeks w. my history of evil early opening cervix, but it was locked down and shut tight until 36 weeks!
