Ah screw 'em! Your health and that of your baby's are the most important things right now. I finished at 36wks 5d and I'm so glad I did. I couldn't have done this last 3 weeks at work and I have a desk job. Don't feel bad for going on maternity leave. You're entitled to it! Some people have no tact.

  • Ugh. People seriously have some big balls when it isn't them dealing with the discomfort!
Screw it. Take the time you need. Who f'ing cares what they think. Use that time to RELAX and prepare for baby!

Tell them to suck it and flip them the bird on the way out the door.

  • That is beyond ridiculous. I am also due the 23rd and don't know how much more my body can take. Take care of yourself and your baby!
  • It's none of their damn business.  My last day is a week before my due date and I have a desk job for which I WFH 90% of the time!

  • Screw them! 2 weeks before my due date I plan to be a hermit until he comes. I'm 4 weeks away and already getting very uncomfortable.
  • It is seriously no one's business. I'm having the reverse problem - I'm working up until my due date and people are actually giving me a hard time about it...lots of "what if you go into labor at work" and "why are you still here." (I can sit a lot at work, I don't want to take the pay cut, and I'd die of boredom if I stayed home). It is seriously no one's business - each person, pregnancy, and workplace is different and our leave should be adapted to that - just like how there is no set rule for when a baby comes, there is no set rule for when it is "appropriate" to take leave.

I think the easiest way to shut people down with their opinions on maternity leave is a nice and simple "My doctor advised I take leave at this point" or "My doctor said it is fine for me to continue working"

  • Screw them! You work until you feel comfortable, and that's none of their business.
  • F them! They have no idea how you are feeling right now! I'm taking 2 weeks off before my baby is due too. I dare someone to make a snide remark about it.

  • Screw them. You know your body and when it's time to rest before baby comes. Enjoy your time off and don't worry about them!

I took 3 weeks and I wouldn't change a thing. It's such an awesome time and I bet you work very hard. Brush it off and focus your energy on your healthy baby to come!!

People are asses. That's all there is. I'm 39+1 today, my last day is tomorrow and my RCS is scheduled for Tuesday. I was asked if I could come in Monday. Uh. No.
    Seriously????  WOW!

  • I haven't really had anyone say much about when I'm leaving but they definitely have an opinion about when I'm coming back.  Tomorrow is my last day at 38+3 and I'm taking 12 weeks, all of which is my paid time off that I've accrued over 3 years.  Comment from my boss yesterday, "Why take that long?  Can't you accomplish what you need to in 6 weeks?"  Um, because I can, that's why.

I don't think they understand maternity leave isn't really a vacation and are mad they have to cover your spot while you're out.  Just try and relax on your time off.  We've got labor and a newborn to prepare for!

  • I caught a slight bit of 'tude from one coworker both this time and last time. (FYI, last time I worked until I was hospitalized for severe pree so it was even more WTF?) She sort of was just the same way and made comments like "Already? " and "Don't you have a ways to go?" And, of course, let it drop she worked until delivery. Of course, she also was induced at 37 weeks (supposed big baby due to GD) so the point we actually worked until was the same. I just ignored her. She also has a much less stressful job than I do. I find it is best to just ignore people like that. As they say, opinions are like assholes-everyone has one and they all stink. Do what is best for you and your body and your baby and your family.

  • I hate people! I left work at 37 weeks and got a mix of "you're going out that soon?" and "you're staying until that late?" So...like do what you need to do. I have been so uncomfortable this week, and my swelling is noticeably better from not driving two hours a day to sit at a desk...I have zero regrets about leaving when I did! Do what is best for you and everyone else can eff off!

  • EFF them!! What a bunch of asshats!
Ditto! Do not feel bad about getting the hell out of there early!

How long you work before you're due, and how long you take off afterwards is a PERSONAL decision. No one else has the right to even imply what you should and shouldn't do, let alone make you feel bad about it.

  • I hate that people feel the need to add their two cents about this. Like you're breaking the damn law. If your HR department is ok with your leave and your manager is they could suck it. I haven't had any "your taking that long off" comments but a lot of "your going to miss the office" comments. My response is always not as much as I'll love bring home for half the summer with my new baby and husband. People should not be trying to guilt you! Tell them to get pregnant if they think it's all rainbows and butterflies!
  • You legally have 4 weeks before due date to get protected time off work and disability pay. This may depend on what type of place you work. So...I'm taking the full 4 weeks off. It's our right.
  • I'm guessing the people that said this don't have kids or have never been pregnant?

Good for you! If you can swing it, you should take it. I wish I could!! I know my coworkers would make the same comments. I also got comments about taking 10 weeks off. And it's usually from men with kids who had wives that only took 6 weeks and their babies "did fine." Rolling my eyes.

I am planning to work until my due date and am REALLY wishing I had planned to take some time before like you are.  In fact, my boss emailed me today and said he was scheduling me to do this huge presentation for the Chancellor next Friday... 4 days before my due date.  I cannot even express how pissed off I am right now.  You'd think he would want me to you know, get things in order for when I'll be gone all summer?  I am going to walk and fuck like a mad woman to try to get this thing out before then just to spite him.

  • When people get bitchy about a woman going on maternity leave (no matter for how long or when she starts it) I like to get bitchy right back about the abhorrent state of maternity leave policies in the United States, and how we're the only industrialized nation in the world with no requirement for paid leave. I would direct them to something like this, and tell them that this is the only country where we're expected to be back in 6 to 12 weeks without getting paid squat in the meantime.

  • Also wishing I had taken some time off before the baby. I am going to ask to work from home the last week, or half days from home. Something, anything. Good for you I say! And people are dumb, the last few weeks of pregnant can be pretty physically debilitating!
