Exhaustion and 12hr shifts- 16weeks

Im 16weeks and im a nurse so for 12hrs im on my feet. I do a mixture of nights and days for instance my offduty this week- wed night (1900-0730)thurs night (finish fri morning) sunday day(0700-1930) mon day. I am struggling so much. I keep nearly passing out, im so fatigued on my breaks i nearly fall asleep and my days off i sleep majority of the time. Anyone got any advice? Ive been trying to eat to help but ive put on 1/2 pound in 3days so dnt want to keep doin that. Im seeing the midwife today as well so hope she helps. Thanks in advance

  • No advice, but I completely empathize. A few months ago I was working 3 night shifts and 2 day shifts per week. Now I'm exclusively nights and it has been a big help. Hope you find a solution.

  • Will your scheduler work with you? Sometimes straight nights is easier, or 2 weeks of first, 2 weeks of 3rd, etc. Ugh, I remember those days...

I remember the days of rotating. Once I had been there about 4 years, it was getting too hard to rotate and we were hiring more people, so I was able to go permanent days. Do you have enough night staff and rotators and seniority to ask? Or do you want to switch to permanent nights?
And unless this is a transition week, that schedule is lousy. You should have at least 48 hours before going back to days. You would prob feel better if you did 2-3 weeks of each, then when you transition to the day weeks have 49-72 hours off ( so if you work fri night, don't work days until tues. Any chance you can arrange z better schedule? Or is that how they work in your unit?

  • That was my struggle. I was working mainly nights during my exhaustion period, and I did fall asleep. But nights makes it way easier since you can sleep all day pretty much and wake up on your own versus a blaring alarm.

But I'm a night owl too. I used to guzzle water and tea because I knew it would make me pee and force me to get up..
