Flipping Breech Baby

Any advice on what I could do myself for flipping baby? I had a routine ultrasound today at 33 weeks and they told me baby boy is breech. Luckily I have plenty of fluid in there, so the tech told me he still has the space to flip.

I KNOW I shouldn't really listen to what the tech says, but she mentioned that usually they like to see them head down by 34 weeks, because after that it becomes less and less likely every week that they'll flip. Then she mentioned that my dr might talk to me at my next appt about the likelihood of a c section... which of course gave me a shit ton of anxiety. So even though I know I shouldn't be, I'm pretty freaked and stressed out. Any advice is much appreciated!!

Re: Flipping Breech Baby

  • Hello,
I will be 33 weeks tomorrow my little girl has been breech the entire time.  I am going for another US next week to see if she has flipped but I have not felt her flip yet so I dont think so.

There is something called Spinning babies that you can look up and there is chiropractor or acupuncture.

I talked to my Dr about manual flipping, called External Cephalic Version.  We will not be doing this.
    1.  50/50 change of it working2. they give you an epi and Dr does it in the hospital3. they can flip back if it does work4. your water can break during or after5. you could go into labor during or after
My hubby and I do not feel that we want to put her or me through all this so if she is still breech we will have a c section.  I have not wanted a c section at all,  more for silly reasons.  Since I have worked at a vet hospital I have seen so many c sections on dogs and some cats and have helped deliver so I just know way too much!!! LOL  I have never had surgery or broken bone or even stitches so just the thought of  a c section was a bit much for me.
After talking to the Dr and knowing know about the manual flipping I would prefer a c section.  I have also talked to so many people that have said it is not bad.  I just had a niece have one Monday and a friend have one today and they have had others as well.
Hope this helps, you can always PM me if you want to chat since we are the same in weeks just about!!!

  • Try not to worry. DS was still breech at my 34 week appointment too. I wasn't until I gave birth to him did I later realize he must have flipped randomly sometime in those two weeks and I didn't notice. He is a pretty stubborn kid so I guess it makes sense. Read the other posts but try not to stress too much at this point.

  • Thanks ladies! I know there's plenty of time and I'm over reacting.... I don't know why I'm being like this. I was fine at the drs office and on most of the way home, then the more I thought about it, the more anxiety I felt. Then I had a complete break down. I realize that having a c section isn't the end of the world and that many women end up having to have one... it's just a tough pill to swallow when they tell you that you may not have the delivery you wanted (and I know a lot of yall have experienced this, so I probably sounds so stupid with my stress while there's other mamas out there dealing with so much worse). Again, thanks for the advice and what not!
  • My first was breech at every appointment up to 37 weeks.  I didn't have any success with spinning babies or coldpacks/peppermint oil to the top of my bump.  Had an ECV at 37 weeks that was unsuccessful.  Went to the chiropractor for Webster Technique treatment, and he flipped later that day, just before 38 weeks!  I'm a big believer.

  • I'm kind of annoyed that the tech said all that to you. Sounds like she was trying to scare you. Even if LO does stay breech up until the end, it is not something you should be scared about. Definitely talk to your OB and whatnot, but at 33 weeks, there is still plenty of time for baby to flip (and even flip back unfortunately).
  • I've been worried about baby being breach too.  She was at my last appointment, and I have another appointment next Tues where my doc will double check with the ultrasound.  I'm fairly sure she's still breech (I felt her hiccups above my belly button yesterday).  Maybe we should start a breech check in so as we get closer people whose babies are still breech can talk about what they are/are not trying, and we can hear some success stories?

I like that idea!! Especially since I'm sure some of us will be trying things and getting good info from out drs... i haven't had an ultrasound since 20 weeks but I had a feeling he would still be breech because of where I was feeling his hiccups...

I'm annoyed too for the same reason! She was pretty quick to throw out the possibility of a c section. And like I said, I know not to listen to anything they say, but it's hard to unhear something like that!
  • I was really hoping for a v back but this baby is still breech at 35 weeks. I'm trying to just accept the fact that a c section could happen. I had one with my first and recovery was not that bad. Everyone makes it sound like c sections are the end of the world. They are not. My baby did great breastfeeding and I was back jogging at 4 weeks post partum with dr approval. I just hope the next time around goes as smooth. If a c section is your birth story just rock it! That's what I keep telling myself.
  • I'm also annoyed that the tech is basically scaring you into a cs. There is still plenty of time for baby to flip. I agree with the responses regarding an ECV. I work in L&D and the success rate is 50/50 and sometimes labor begins quickly or it can put baby into distress and you end up with a cs that day. No fun.

My DD was breech at 33wks and I did a lot of swimming and she flipped by 35 wks. I also believe in the Webster technique but make sure your chiro is very experienced in treating pregnant women and performing the technique. Good luck! Stay positive. Plenty of time.

  • I saw an acupuncturist and got moxa sticks from her also. They really get baby moving! I am checking today to see if it has worked yet.
