Juice?

Do you give you LO juice or allow them to have it at daycare? I picked LO up today and we have been trying bm in a sippy this week and when I asked how he did they said he did ok but did better when their was juice in the sippy instead of milk. I was a little shocked that they were giving him juice I didn't think juice was really recommended this young. I asked them to not give him juice and only water and milk from now on but was wondering if I'm being crazy by not allowing it.

Re: Juice?

  • I don't know if it's allowed at this age but I'm thinking just water and milk on a daily basis and juice for special occasions.

  • No to juice right now. We don't drink much juice in our house anyway.

  • VERY LITTLE. Pedi said to dilute, which we do. I do 1/4 of organic Apple juice and the rest water in sippie. I'd say once a week or so.

  • No juice for us. The nutritionist at my pediatrician said to avoid it as long as possible.
  • I'm no expert, but I won't give my LO juice. Water and breast milk is all she needs.
  • I think it's allowed, but I don't think it's a big deal for you to ask them not to give it to your LO. We are on the no juice list at school and I think the teachers prefer it because they'd rather give water anyway (less sticky mess).

And FWIW, Ty does much better with water than BM or formula in a sippy, I think they are used to a faster flow and they have to work harder for it.

  • I have only given a tiny bit when needed to help "move things along." That was only twice and he didn't seem to drink it any more than the water he usually has.

I have made orange/strawberry juice the juicer a few times. But no store bought juice.

We do not give LO juice, and I would probably flip out on daycare if they ever gave it to him without asking me or my husband. You don't just serve that to an infant without permission.

I would be upset they gave him something new without running it by you first. P has never had juice and I don't plan to give him any because of the sugar and lack of nutritional value.
  • Thank ladies ya I felt like it was one of the "things" they should ask parents about first but wasn't sure if I was just being overbearing. DH flipped when I told him he is way more PO'd than I am! I changed his eating log a few weeks ago to allow them to give him toddler foods instead of purees because we don't do purees at home anymore and I wonder if with the toddler food they just assumed juice too. I'm going to talk to them more about it tomorrow to make sure they don't give it to him again and find out how long they have been giving it to him!

I'm not anti juice at all, but not at this age. My 4 year old started getting organic 100% juice at 2 and DD will get the same. It's not necessary but a nice treat when they're older. I'd be pretty upset at my daycare for doing that

  • I don't even think our daycare offers juice. Their meal calendar says milk/water offered with all meals and water offered throughout the day.

  • No juice here and thank goodness I never gave ds1 juice. Ds1 is 3 and had juice only a few times (Apple cider in the fall) and he doesn't really like it. Our dentist has always discouraged it as it's pretty much all sugar and no nutritional value. With ds1 having dental issues now I can only imagine how much worse they would be if I served sugary drinks and snacks.

  • After reading your update, I'm sure it was a matter of you "ok'ing" the toddler menu and juice is on it. Quinn gets juice almost every day to combat constant constipation.  For whatever reason, nothing else works except pureed prunes so some days he gets that instead but some days he refuses to eat it so juice it is.

I give juice diluted pretty regularly. She drinks water with no problem at all as well. :::::runs and hides::::
