January 2014 Moms

sobbing mama

short story: my 3yo DS put all of my stored milk in a thermal bag sometime in the last few days and I can't use it. he asked me on Friday what the bag was for and today I found the bag with my formerly frozen milk inside.

Longer story: I have to go back to work tomorrow and I'm traveling for three days. LO has never had formula and barely drinks from a bottle. given the situation I am considering using similac supplement formula.

Any suggestions on how to transition her so quickly to formula or .... I guess I can try to pump as much as possible between now and tomorrow. I'm afraid she isn't going to eat anything till I'm back from work.

Longer story: DH lost his job the week after she was born and can't find another job so I had to find one after being a sahm to three kids under three. I am a mess and can't believe I'm headed back to work after three years but trying to be glad that we have at least one income.

Pity party over....

Wow! That's a lot at one time! Sending hugs and wishing you lots of luck when you go back to work. Similac has a formula (I have it as already made stuff and no idea if it comes in powder) specifically for breast feeding moms. It was given to me and I don't know what qualifies it as such but may be worth looking into.

  • No advice either, just wanted to say I'm so sorry!!
  • Hugs to you. I don't really have any advice. I had to supplement after DS was born, and he was fine going between breast milk and formula. Maybe introduce a formula bottle tonight? You LO will not starve while you are gone..they will figure it out. I hope your DH finds a job soon.
  • If he is hungry, he will figure out a way to eat. Just remember that. ((hugs))
  • I'm so sorry you are going thru this! Hugs.

Fwiw we gave DS similac for supplementation and he had no problems with it. You could always do a bottle of half bm half formula so it'll be an easier transition for her

I just want to offer hugs! That's a lot going on at once. I hope that your
DD will take a bottle easily for you and your DH finds another job soon.

  • Pump what milk you can and mix it with some formula. I use both formula and my milk. My little one needs the extra calories from the formula. Then just make sure you have on hand some grip water or gas medicine just incase your baby gets some gas bubbles. I like to put the gripe water in with the bottle. Don't worry I'm sure your little one will be ok, good luck
  • Your LO will be okay. You are doing what is best for your family right now and use that mentality to help get you through. Hang in there!
  • So sorry for you!  I would be devastated if that happened!  Your LO will be okay - they wont starve themselves.  Just so you know the similac for supplementation is pretty much the same as regular similac (just a marketing tool to sell more formula) so if you have the blue container you can use that too.    I used to do half BM and half similac for DS when I stopped making enough.  I second having some gas drops or gripe water on hand in case of any tummy upsets.

  • Hang in there and I'm sorry to hear of such an unfortunate situation. You'll be OK. I can only imagine how deflated you feel after losing so much BM. I can completely see my son doing that!

  • Thanks so much to all of you. Naturally, the last few days at work have not been nearly as bad as I expected and LO is doing fine.

  • Very sorry to hear and hope your DH finds a job soon.
So I had to supplement DS cause I'm not pumping enough etc. I was sick for week and my supply took a hit and I didn't have much of freezer stash. I used similac supplement formula. He took it just fine. What others said above, If u do have some pumped BM u can do half and half for first bottle or 2 so he gets use to taste. But again if your LO is really hungry they should eat and be fine. And my LO was always gassy etc and this formula didn't make it worse so that's good.
  • All of this would have me In tears too. I hope your first day hoes wl. LO won't starve!
