August 2014 Moms

Gestational freaking diabetes...VENT.

So I took my 1 hour glucose test yesterday.

My doctor's nurse called me just barely to inform me that I definitely have GD. Apparently my numbers were so awful that they don't even need/want to waste time doing the 3 hour test.

They are calling me in a script for a glucose meter as we speak and I have to start pricking my fingers 4 times a day starting first thing in the morning. I have to do this until my next appointment (May 8th) when my doctor will look at my numbers and decide if just diet adjustment or that plus insulin will be my fate.

I feel like bawling.

I mean, I fucking survived CANCER when I was a teenager. But the thought of pricking my own fingers makes me physically ill and I start to feel overwhelmed and upset.

I know there's nothing to be done for it. GD happens and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure my son stays healthy. But fuck...

I don't even know how to use a damn meter! I don't know what the hell I'm doing!

I'm going to go sit in my nursery and wallow in self pity until my husband gets home. Then I'll go get the fucking glucose meter.

Re: Gestational freaking diabetes...VENT.

  • Sorry to hear that Salsy, that really sucks.  I know I will be a crying mess if I end up with a positive glucose test.  I still have 4 weeks before mine though.  Hopefully your readings on the glucose meter won't be as bad as the test results were & you won't need insulin.  Having to cut back on carbs/sweets is bad enough.

  • I am so sorry! I would be scared of all of the finger pricking too, but hopefully it won't be so bad. FX that you can treat it with just diet.

I'm really sorry. I bombed my 1 hour bad enough to get diagnosed with GD too. I've been doing the diet for about a week, poking my fingers, and just started oral meds last night. It's really not that bad. I know it seems overwhelming at first, but your OB should either send you to a nutritionist/nurse who will explain everything to you, or maybe your doctor him/herself will. You won't be left with a meter without instructions on what to do. There is a GD board on baby center and also on facebook that I've found super helpful. One thing to remember, this is NOT your fault. Your placenta is driving your hormones and in some women, their pancreas just can't keep up. PM me if I can help in anyway with what I've learned so far!
I agree with all of this. I had GD with my first pregnancy and after you learn the diet and how to use the meter it just becomes part of the daily routine. I know exactly how you feel, I cried for a long time after I got off the phone with the nurse who gave me the news. It will be ok and definitely check out the babycenter GD community, I learned a lot there.

Sorry @salsy2012‌ . I had GD when I was pregnant with DS, and I thought it wouldn't happen to me- hadn't gained a ton of weight, not a big carb eater etc. I totally cried when they told me I failed the 3 hour and then I cried a couple times after because I was cranky about the diet.

I promise though- it's not the bad. Once you get the hang of the diet and what works for you specifically, you will be fine! My one piece of advice would be to prick the side of your finger instead of the finger pad, it hurts less.

I was diet controlled and eventually my dr took me down to only 2 pricks a day. My L/D was wonderful and GD really didn't interfere with anything. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. :)

  • In so sorry! I fully expected to bomb my 1 hour. I've been borderline with both previous pregnancies. That combined with how Brad I've been feeling lately, I don't believe therm when they claimed I passes.

I hope that you are able to maintain with just diet!

  • Two things. ALWAYS wash your hands before taking your blood sugar. ALWAYS. Food residue, lotions, anything on your hands can impact the numbers.

And, if you are having problems getting enough blood from your fingers, rub your hands together to warm them up, then rub your forearms going downwards, towards your fingertips, to improve blood flow. You shouldn't need to use the highest setting, doing so can cause you to get little scabs on the draw site.

Awesome advice @cruelsound! Thank you so much lady!

  • I have PCOS and a family history of diabetes, and I fully expected to have trouble with my sugar levels.  I grew up watching my grandparents and mom testing their blood sugar levels frequently, and would even test mine for fun!  I started testing mine after meals in the first trimester when I felt odd just to make sure things were alright.  They seem to be so far.  The needle pricks don't hurt; it's really not a big deal.  I take my test in a few weeks, and will not be surprised if I fail at all.   It is what it is.  As long as baby is healthy and okay, I'll do what I need to do!
  • So sorry! I had GD with my first and I cried and cried. But once I got over the shock and learned the meter, learned the diet, and what worked for my body it wasn't that bad. Education about what works for you is key! Also the tips cruel gave you are great! I stayed diet controlled and even participated in a GD research study at a local med school university hospital. I learned walking 15-30min post meal for about 20min would lower my sugar by 20pts.

    Good luck! You got this!

  • So glad to see you say "it's not so bad." Fingers crossed it gets easier, as the ladies with experience suggest.

As a FTM (I take my 1-hour test next Tues), my only experience with GD is through a dear friend of mine who was diagnosed last year. She (and her husband, in solidarity) treated it with diet adjustments and ended up learning a lot about their health and nutrition in the process. Although the first half of her pregnancy felt sluggish and unpleasant, by the time her baby shower rolled around she looked and felt amazing -- completely glowing and full of energy. She and her hubby are STILL experimenting with limiting processed carbs, it was so effective for them. For what it's worth.

Also, cancer survivors are my personal superheroes. You rule.

  • Ugh what a bummer!!! I'm sorry :/ hoping it's controlled just by diet and the finger pricking isn't as awful as you are thinking, I know I would be freaked about that too.
