1st Trimester

Anybody else have migraines still?

What do you do for them? I obviously can't take my old medicine... I've taken tylenol and ibuprofen (per doctors orders) and my headache just keeps getting worse. The only thing that helps is keeping ice or a popsicle in my mouth ALL the time. I don't know why it works, but it does!

I think I'm going to have to give in and call my doctor for a prescription tomorrow... he said there were some narcotics that are safe during pg. Does anybody have any experience with this? Are there certain pain pills that are better than others? Should I request one specifically that is safe or trust my neurologist (who knows I am pg)?

Re: Anybody else have migraines still?

  • Have you tried caffeine? I find that having a cup of coffee or a coke will help some with the pain if I drink it right when I feel the migraine coming on (I also take extra-strength tylenol). I don't want to try narcotics, so I just try to sleep through the pain, but I realize that's not a solution for everyone, especially if you work or have kids.

  • I've had two since getting pregnant. ?I took Tylenol with Codeine. ?Just kind of took the edge off. ?Alternating between hot and cold compresses on my head while soaking in the tub helps a little too.

  • Oh, you probably also want to double check any meds with your OB because she'll be more up to date with current research. Doctors mostly focus on their own specialties, so your neurologist's info probably comes from the drug companies.

  • call your ob. There are a few things they can RX -- they don't work as great as an imitrex or other triptan- but they are going to help more than tylenol.... though, sometimes 4 advil works best for me - which my OB said was OK up until about 18w.

Fioricet works the best out of the Rx stuff... sometimes Vicodin - it's really a crap shoot for me.  I have had a migraine since x-mas night- and it JUST went away this afternoon.... it really sucks.

i find having a humidifyer on in all the rooms helps, too... strapping an ice pack to my head.... etc.

def talk to your OB - and if he/she won't do anything more for you- see your  neurologist. They know what to do wtih pg women.

feel better! I literally know your pain :(

  • I work with kids, actually :) I did have a Pepsi tonight when I took the tylenol because I thought that might help... no luck yet. Popsicles are the only thing that help, it's so weird. I guess the cold numbs the nerves or something? My husband is going to go get some more for me right now :)

I was hoping to avoid taking anything during the first trimester... but I don't think I can keep functioning much longer if it gets any worse. Or if the popsicle/ice quits working.

  • I've talked to my OB and my neuro about it, I just haven't actually had an OB appointment yet (not until week 11!) so I didn't know if they would call in anything for me, much less narcotics. My neurologist has been working with me for years, and already said they would call something in for me without me taking off work for a visit.
  • I have then still...but I deal But I think it is my eyes...I wear my glasses at night now....get a eye exam first

  • Def not my eyes, I just had an exam. And I've had migraines since I was 6... I don't think my eye doctor will fix them, unfortunately!
  • I would call your OB.  Mine gave me a script but told me I can take aspirin free excedrin too.  The script wound up being worthless so I still with excederin or Tylenol and a Coke.

  • I've had a handful of migraines this past year and my first one being pregnant was last night. ?It was awful, so I feel your pain. ?I have a feeling that mine are caused from my eyes, so I plan on making an appointment today. ?

Last night I took extra-strength tylenol and I had some regular Coke for the caffeine. ?It didn't go away, but it helped enough so that I could fall asleep. ??
