Grinding of teeth

Hi ladies, I have been posting on TTGP as I am TFAS. I have a question for those with 1 year olds. My 14 month old has started to grind her teeth. She has two bottom and rep on top. Not sure if I should be concerned or if she is doing this only because she is experimenting with the new teeth and likes it, I was concerned about damage. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Grinding of teeth

  • I think a lot of kids do this.  DS1 did it a lot more than DS2.  It was a phase, he eventually stopped (took a few weeks maybe?), and they are both OK.

  • DD did this. I just redirected her attention to something else and she stopped doing it in a week or two. It was much rougher on my ears/nerves than on her teeth!

They do this to explore the new teeth but tend to do it more when teething as well.  It is horrible to listen too...like nails on a chalkboard but isn't anything to worry about.  Try to distract for your sake more than theirs!

  • Dd has done it the last couple of times she got a new tooth. Both times it lasted a week or so. I think she was just getting the feel of the new tooth.
  • DD did this when she had her 4 incisors coming in.  It drove me nuts!!!  I asked the pedi about it and our friend who's a dentist and they both said it's normal.  She's getting used to having teeth and the grinding was also probably helping the 4 come in.  I couldn't stand the sound so thankfully she only did it for maybe a month or less?  Just offer something else to chew/gnaw on if you can - DD loves those mesh baggies on rings that we could put ice cubes in.
