Possibility of the EDD being off by almost 2 weeks? *Updated*

I'm new to theis baby thing and I've researched as much as I can but I need input. Based on my LMP I should be 7 weeks today. Clearly there has to be a margin for error and other factors, but how much? My ultrasound today was unable to see any more than a gestational sac that measured around 5.5 weeks. Nothing else. My doctor saw me right after he got the U/S report and took more blood to check my levels (which I'll call and get tomorrow). So for now I'm left with two scenarios...either I ovulated late and I'm really only 5.5 weeks (which would be so GREAT) or there is a problem and the pregnancy is not progressing as it should be. 24 hours is a hell of a long time to wait for a 39 year old FTM. Hoping it's more common than not that the EDD is inaccurate and that I'm going to spend the rest of today and tomorrow morning worrying for nothing.  ETA: I got the bloodwork results back today. hCG 6001 - up from 3400 5 days ago. Progesterone at 10.6. Scheduled another u/s for Tuesday. I'm overthinking and over researching. It's all a little too much right now. I read one post and feel hopeful and the next I'm in tears thinking the worst. Anyway...that's my update. Hoping for some good news next week.

My edd based on my dating ultrasound was exactly 2 weeks after the due date calculated based on my LMP. The Dr said everything looked wonderful, so I'm not worried. My cycles have always been wonky, and I only had one ppp after I had my dd in Jan 2013. I knew my due date would be off, but never imagined it could be off by that much.

ETA fx you get answers quickly!

  • My LMP would put me at 8 weeks, but I wad charting and know I ovulated two weeks late so I am 6 weeks and my ultrasound confirmed that yesterday. I wouldn't worry until your doctor days you need to.

  • I'm very sorry that you find yourself in this spot.  Being in limbo like this is so hard.  I have a couple of questions for you.  When did you get your BFP?  Are your cycles normally long?  Is this the first time your doctor has checked your HCG levels?

You absolutely could have ovulated late and that could be causing this.  If this is the first time your doctor is checking your HCG then they will most likely have you come back 48 hours later to do another draw.  The initial number does not tell you as much as what it does over 48 hours.  Most likely that will give you a good clue as to whether everything is progressing and will have a repeat ultrasound in a week.  The waiting is hard but just try to stay calm.  I know that is hard.  I hope that everything turns out wonderfully for you.
I got a positive result at home on 4/9 and confirmed with my doc on 4/11. He took blood and on that date my hCG was 135. He took more again this past Friday (4/25) and it was 3474. I had it taken again today and will get those results tomorrow. My cycles are 25 days like clockwork. Thanks for the positive feedback. FX till tomorrow when I can hopefully get some good news.

  • It's definitely possible to have ovulated 2 weeks "late."  By my LMP, I would be due Dec 22nd, but I know when I O'd because I was temping, using OPKs, checking CM & CP, etc.  So my EDD will be 8 days later because of when I ovulated (on CD22 rather than the "average" CD14).

Were you tracking your cycle at all?  It really helped give me piece of mind.  Either way, FXs for good news for you tomorrow!
I wasn't tracking my ovultaion dates at all. I just know my period was due on 4/6 and it didn't happen. :(

  • Waiting DOES SUCK!!! FX for happy news for you too!

It happened to my sister, she is now due a week ahead of me. I'll find out if I am later or not as well... hahah. I know when I ovulated, I have pain when I ovulate. One thing I am not sad about missing lol

  • I ovulated way later than usual this cycle, so my u/s showed that I was 2 weeks "behind" my EDD based on LMP. Even if your cycles are usually "like clockwork" you can still have an unusual month. FX that everything is okay.

If you got a positive test on 4/9, the earliest you could have been then, for sake of argument, is 3 weeks pg (7dpo). That would put you at 6 weeks today. Most likely, though, you were a bit further along than that. If you only measured 5.5 weeks and nothing in the sac today, I'm sorry to say, but I don't think it looks very promising. Of course, I hope I'm completely wrong. Good luck.

ETA: I assume you mean 5w3-4days (not 5w5d). If you are 5w5d, that is closer to 6 weeks, but a yolk sac should be present by 5w4d. If it was abdominal though maybe they couldn't see it.

  • And I was done crying until I read that... :(

  • What kind of ultrasound did they do?  This happened with me last week, they did an ab ultrasound and I should have been 7w2d but I was measuring 5w6d and they say 2 sacs (twins!) but nothing else so far.  I go back again Fri, but my doc said it was normal, esp with twins, and ultrasounds have a margin of error of +/- 5 days, so if you ovulate late AND they're in error, it will roughly match up.

I'm really sorry. What kind of u/s was it? Did they say anything about the yolk sac? If it was abdominal it's entirely possible they didn't see it.

  • As others have said, it's very very common to ovulate late. Even a couple of weeks. Especially if you were stressed or traveling at the time of your normal ovulation time. My fingers are crossed for good news and I hope tomorrow brings wonderful news :)

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to just think positive thoughts like I've been doing all along and hope that tomorrow brings good news. They did an abdominal u/s today. Hopefully that's why they didn't see too much. I'll go with that for now. I'll update tomorrow after I get my new numbers back and see where I'm at. Thanks again for the support. Crying all day sucks...especially when it might be for nothing but you have all been very helpful and I appreciate it.

The abdominal u/s could very well be the reason they couldn't see anything. That early, they should really be going straight for a trans vag. Sending T&P and ((hugs)) your way!

I agree. Most practices around me won't do just abdominal if it's under 12 weeks. That's most likely the reason for not seeing much. Try not to worry Hun.

  • Babies hit growth spurts at different rates. DS measured a week later at the first US and averaged 20 weeks at his 18 week US. I know it's hard not to worry, but my guess is your little one is doing just fine.
  • I'm so sorry you are concerned and waiting is the worst. I'm thinking about you and sending good thoughts your way! Please keep us posted!
