Major Spit Up/Vomit.. Normal?

FTM freak out over here.. I'm EBF and so far it's been going great. My milk came in Monday morning, DS ate like a champ all day and gained 6 oz (we had a follow up ped appointment). Then on Tuesday he continued to eat great but after his 7 pm and 10 pm feeding he spit up/ threw up a lot. It soaked his clothes and we had to also change our sheets (the 10 pm incident was on our bed). And it was sort of vomit-y smelling and curdled. Is this normal? Also, Ever since my milk came in I was going for 15-20 min on each side, but now I'm wondering if he was just eating too much. Last night I let him set the pace and it was about 8-10 min on each side.. So cutting down the feelings from 40 min to 20. I see the LC on Monday but I thought I would ask here, too! Thanks!

  • Sounds normal to me.  Sometimes they eat too fast, or too much.  Sometimes they have a gas bubble that doesn't come up when they burp (or they won't burp), that ends up coming up later and bringing milk up with it.

15-20 minutes each side sounds like a lot to me.  LO usually does 15 minutes on one side (won't take the other), or will do 10-12 minutes on each side.  He only eats longer than that when he's really sleepy and keeps falling asleep on the boob :-)

  • We had a few actual vomits when kiddo was young... maybe 5-7 episodes total over the course of the first few months? It's definitely noticeable... there's a lot coming up and it splats everywhere. It was always choking-related for us. He'd gag and his reflex would kick into overdrive. I never was overly concerned with it.
  • I asked my pedi about this because my DS was projectile once or twice a day and spitting up otherwise. He said it was fine and there was nothing i could really do about it. He just told me to hold him up for a whole 30 minutes. That helped so much (he hasn't projectiled since) but is not fun when doing night time feedings!

  • DD has reflux. She projectile vomits, it's always chunky and smells of bile. That can be normal, but she screams when it happens, and it's very uncomfortable before. As long as they seem like a " happy spitter" it's normal and ok.
