So our DC just sent out an email stating that there will be a potluck supper (which presumably means they want us all to bring something) for the teachers on May 29, and they would like each family to contribute $20 per kid for this celebration. Is it reasonable for me to politely inquire about how the contributions will be used? Mainly I want to know that it is actually going to the teachers. One of my kid's teachers let slip one day that the teachers weren't paid for snow days, of which we had numerous this year. We get nothing back for days missed like that, of course, so I was appalled to hear the teachers weren't being paid. So I'm a little suspicious of what this money is going to.
The "room moms" of DD's kinder class asked for a 30.00 donation at the beginning of the year, from each family, to go towards class party stuff, teacher appreciation week and a few other class related things. I just got an email looking for volunteers to sign up to bring DD's teacher a lunch and a home cooked meal or gift cert for dinners every day next week. On top of that, the room moms have gotten her an amazon card and made a picture collage of the kids......I really like DD's teacher and I volunteered to make a dinner, but it seems like a lot to ask for. 20 seems like a large contribution for one celebration- I would definitly ask.

OMG I would be livid if someone suggested I cook dinner for my child's teacher. I barely have time to cook meals for my own family. That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard on here yet. It's obvious this is being run by SAHMs.

Wow. I'm a teacher and feel this is over the top, especially the home cooked meals part. Yes. $20 IS a lot for a celebration. Ask what the money is going towards and don't be afraid not to donate if you're not satisfied with your answer.
Whenever anything is asked for that involves "home-cooked meals," in my head I always substitute "something I can buy from a restaurant". But that's me.
