AW/SS: lightning crotch and period-like cramps

I'm 27 weeks tomorrow. I've been experiencing period like cramping pretty consistently for a few weeks now. Doc said it was contractions. Wanted me to stay hydrated, and go to L&D if more than 6 an hour. About 4 days ago, I started getting stabbing pains in my cervix to go with it. Oh joy! I haven't been to L&D in about 3 weeks. Of course, I consulted dr. Google who says I may be entering pre-term labor.

And yes, I plan on calling my docs office as soon as they open.

Anyone else experiencing this? I never had it with my first, so it's all new to me.

  • As far as the contractions go, yes. I have been having this for a few weeks. My doc said the same thing. As long as they aren't patterned for more than and hour at a time then I just need to relax and hydrate. No experience with the stabbing pains though.

I've had the cervical stabbing pains quite a few times and have yet to figure out what they are. No cramps though. Sending T&P's your way!

  • Everything about the cervical pains I'm finding says "baby must be kicking it." Except I've felt her kick it, and it's a different kind of pain.

I did have to call the on call doc this weekend since I fell on my ass (just wanted to be sure I didn't need to come in and be checked out), and I mentioned the pains. He said to be careful, because it could be a sign I'm dilating. He said as long as I wasn't spottig, I didn't need to panic. And he suggested I touch base with my own doc early this week.

That's what I've read too. If it makes you feel better (I know all pregnancies are different so not sure if a comparison is worth it) I had my cervix checked on Friday and the dr said I'm not dialated, and I've had the stabbing pains on & off for about 1-2 months now. Hope all goes well with your dr appt!

  • i had this with my first (at 33 weeks), and i DID dialate 1cm...but then everything stopped, and i walked around like that for 5 weeks and delivered at 38.5 weeks.  so it's possible that everything will stop on its own and you'll be fine for the duration. i hope your dr brings you in just for your piece of mind though...

    stay put LO!

Last pregnancy, my baby was breech until 37.5 weeks. I told my doctor that I started having the lightning crotch sensations and he said, "Hmm, that usually means baby is head down and low." Sure enough, he'd flipped. With this baby, I've been having them for about a month, and sure enough he is head down. I've never associated the lightning crotch with labor.

Eta. Always better safe than sorry! Good luck!

  • Cervix has thinned just a tiny bit. Not enough to really worry about right now. He told me to take ibuprofen for the pain of contractions and lightning crotch (evidently it's safe until 34 weeks). If the ibuprofen doesn't help, he'll give me something else that should help. He also wrote me a note for reduced hours at work (I work 40 right now, all of them on my feet)...being on my feet and really active keeps the contractions coming. They're so painful I can't really function.

  • I had the sharp vaginal pains for about a month now and they went away, was checked by the specialist and had no cervical changes. They started again very early sunday Morning and I began having regular contractions. Went to ob triage and was told I was in preterm labor, was given a shot of terbutaline and stuff. So be careful, they may not jot do anything one day and the next minute they might. Just trust your body, if it feels off it probably is.

I've had both but just put in the list of pregnancy symptoms. I know Little Dude like to push down on my cervix with his hands and that sends zingers. I've been having more Braxton Hicks contractions and know to just take a walk and drink some watered down juice. I had quiet the spell last night though and thought maybe I should take a trip to L&D but it subsided after a few hours.

I think it's just our bodies getting us prepared for what will be happening in the next couple (or few) months.

  • Does it mean your baby is coming?
  • I started having contractions spaced 3-5 minutes apart at 34 weeks with DS. I went to L&D and was checked, no dilation. I continued to have regularly timed contractions until DS was induced at almost 42 weeks. Apparently that is just what my body needed to do to prepare? My Dr. says it just happens to some women, lucky me.I hope all turns out to be okay and that you aren't in premature labor.

"A" for effort, trying to start shit all over the place. And yes, I said shit. Boo hoo. If you had read any of my comments, you would know that my baby is not coming. At least, not today. Hopefully she'll stay put until my scheduled csection. Only time will tell. My doctor and I are working together to ensure that both baby and I are healthy. Because that's what responsible moms do, who love their children. They are monitored by doctors and/or midwifes.

  • A couple of weeks ago, I had contractions every 8 minutes for over 12 hours that didn't stop with hydration/rest. I had had contractions before that, but I called my doctor and he had me come in the next day. Luckily, by then the contractions had become irregular. When he checked me, I wasn't dilated at all, thank goodness. He said they've set a new baseline for what my body can handle without dilating, and I'll probably have them until I deliver. Knowing that, I'm much less anxious about the daily contractions. Best of luck!
