When do you swaddle? (And do they like it?)

Lo is 2wks 3 days

At first we were swaddling most of the time and now mainly do it only at night, unless she's really fussy. Do you swaddle during the day and at night? Or only nighttime?

Also, Sometimes it seems like she really enjoys it (calms down, sleeps well) but other times she grunts relentlessly and fights to get her arms loose, and I can't get her to go back to bed. This usually happen early morning (4am or 7am feeding). I can't tell if I'm not swaddling tight enough or what to do when she gets like that.

Thoughts?

Edit- typed wrong age..LO is 2 weeks not 3 :)

Re: When do you swaddle? (And do they like it?)

  • My girl is almost 2 weeks old and she HATES the swaddle. She needs her hands by her face or like up by her ears to sleep. She does the panicked grunt to get her arms free. I have been swaddling the rest of her body and she seems to like that but it doesn't seem to help her sleep.

  • My LO is 3 weeks old. I swaddle at night and during afternoon nap time. I recently began swaddling with her arms free because she gets herself free anyway. I dont think I'll swaddle as much when the weather gets warmer, but I found these great muslin blankets that work wonderfully because they are nice and big but not too thick.
  • We only swaddle at night, and can only get his arms in when he's already mostly asleep. He's really strong and does NOT like his arms down if he's awake! We tried Swaddle Mes and Halo sleep sacks, and neither work, so we just wait till he's drowsy and use a good old A & A blanket.

  • We are on day two and she sleeps four or five hour stretches when tightly swaddled. Does not like it when awake and will break out of it when she is ready to wake up.

With DS he really hated it for a few weeks but would sleep better and longer with it. Eventually he tolerated it better and took it as a cue to settle and go to sleep.

I swaddle at night when we are sleeping. He is much less restless while swaddled and sleeps longer.

  • We swaddle DS at night (2w1d) but don't swaddle until after feeding and he's practically asleep.

  • We swaddle at night only.
  • We swaddle mostly at night or whenever he gets fussy. He really loves it, calms him down really quick
  • We swaddle at night only as well using a sleep sack.

  • At night only. I want them to associate the swaddle with night sleep and it seems to be working. Once swaddled they go down pretty fast at night (after fighting it for a few minutes).

  • We use to swaddled all the time. But now only at night trying to make it into a night time routine
  • My LO is 2 1/2 weeks old and has hated being swaddled from day 1. He needs his hands near face when sleeping so I use a sleep sack instead.
  • We've been swaddling hands free since Day 1. He always has his hands close to his face, and has since he was in utero (every ultrasound = hands in his face lol). We recently started only using it at night to signal sleepy time. He doesn't mind being swaddled, so I'm hoping the swaddling and noise machine at night means he'll start associating night time with sleep.
  • she needs to be swaddled to sleep apart from us, whether that be for naptime or bedtime.  i almost always nurse unswaddled, but if she's having a particularly difficult or fussy time going down, i'll feed one side, do a diaper change and swaddle, then offer the other side while she's swaddled so she truly nurses to sleep and i can just pop her off and lay her down.

we tried unswaddled naps a few weeks ago and that didn't go over well at all.  she's still little (4.5 weeks) so i'm in no hurry to take the swaddle away.
  • We haven't swaddled since we left the hospital. She likes to have her hands by her face and gets pissed if they're even covered by her sleeves or a loose blanket, let alone stuck in a swaddle.
