Exercise vs. Swelling

Okay I know we are supposed to exercise. .I began wearing my phone in my pocket this week to see how much exercise I get in class. I have also considered walking in the evening even though I am extremely tired.
My question is since my doctors are so worried about my blood pressure should I still go for a walk in the evening when my ankles look like I am smuggling easter eggs in them?
I know exercise is good for lowering my blood pressure but the swelling is getting to be an issue I can't even wear shoes I wear flip flops all day because they swell so my (my shoes are tight to begin with).
Also one ankle is swollen worse than the other is this normal or should I check withthe doctor. The medicine I take for my high BP lower my heart rate so it doesn't surprise me that my right side is swollen worse just never pre eclampsia and don't want to be a spaz and call the doc a million times before birth esp since this is my 3rd

Re: Exercise vs. Swelling

  • I had a lot of swelling with DS1 but was still able to walk and do prenatal yoga for exercise; however, I had no BP issues at all. I would definitely consult a doc before starting any kind of exercise with BP issues. I think this is a case of better-safe-and-possibly-spazzy-than-sorry.

  • I know by the end of the last pregnancy my feet were really swollen and I even had to take my shoe laces out of the last pair of holes on my sneaker so I'd have enough lace to actually tie them. Those and my flips were just about the only shoes I could wear towards the end but I continued working out right up until the end. However, I have abnormally low BP, and I agree with PPs about checking with your doctor before adding more exercise to your routine. Could you maybe add walking in earlier in your day when you aren't as swollen yet?
  • My doctor was encouraging me to exercise last week at my dr apt. And normally i dont work this much. I am working all week in a special ed classroom with autism kids. And i get to sit quite a bit but my swelling increased dramatically from last week. I haven't worked more yet but I accepted this job for every day this week and I normally only work 2-3 days a week spaced out.
I think I will call and ask if I can come in tomorrow when I get off so they can see the swelling and decide if I can continue working like this next week.

  • I have lots of experience with swelling in my feet and legs due to a car accident with a drunk driver years ago- I was diagnosed with lymphedema and nerve damage on my spine and have a neurostimulator to help.
I have worked with specialists and doctors that always say excersize can actually be one of the best things to help move fluid through but should be low impact (swimming for instance is the best and then walking). There are others things you can do to prevent or improve swelling, too- elevation is key (I sleep with my feet propped up on a few pillows), watching salt intake, and TED hose (which are compression stockings- a total bitch to put on but when it's bad, they REALLY can keep the fluid off).
I know that fluid buildup can affect blood pressure and stuff, so I would def talk to your doc before starting anything new. But at least maybe there are a few things you can do to help avoid it getting worse along the way!
  • I am loving swimming. I walk laps and also swim some breast stroke, on my side, and back stroke. It has minimized my swelling and belly pressure tremendously.
