Dieting after baby?

Just curious..
Is anyone planning on starting a dieting regimen after baby?
I was only 21 when undelivered DS (7 years ago) so the baby weight literally fell off- thanks to high metabolism. I won't be so blessed this time around :/
I have always used Weight Watchers and it's worked well..just curious if there are other ideas? My biggest concern is the effect on my milk supply (I was unable to BF DS due to medical reasons).
What works/worked for you and how long did you wait PP to start?

Re: Dieting after baby?

  • I lost 35 pounds on WW+ before getting pregnant this time. I will probably start it again around 6 months pp so my body has time to lose most of the baby weight on its own and bfing and pumping is well established.

  • I don't plan on starting a diet regimine just eating better than I am right now. I'm in comfort mode right now, so that will change soon.

    I LOVED WW!
In fact, even when we aren't on a strict diet, we still try to stick to the general routine.
I was about 30lbs over weight when TTC this pregnancy and my OB recommended I start a diet to better my chances..I was PG within 2 months. It's definitely the easiest diet to stick with but I know others swear by what worked for them.
I think my plan was to recover physically from birth and then jump on the diet bandwagon but I'm afraid to risk my milk supply.
  • I definitely plan to start a diet as soon as I am able to get out and move around again. I live right next to a state park that has 3 and 5 mile trails and I plan to walk it often with my LO. The reality having gained so much weight is becoming more real since I am due so soon.
  • I'll start limiting my junk food intake during the 6-8 weeks of maternity leave and then I'll hardcore diet afterward.

With my first, I found I dropped about 3/4 of my weight gained in the first 4 weeks (about 30lbs) but gained back half of it eating like crap. I had a hard time losing weight after that, but I blame pumping. Once I quit pumping, I lost another 40 lbs until I got pregnant again.

I've gained the same amount of weight this pregnancy as last (40 lbs) and it has only been two years, so I'm expecting the same pattern of weight loss. Except this time. I'm only breastfeeding and/or pumping for the first two months and then switching to formula when I have to go back to work.

  • I used the Lose It app after my first and lost 10 pounds with it but then got lazy and stopped using it. My plan this time is to use it and stick with it until I lose all the weight.

  • When I was diet hunting, I a wear I saw on WW +plus that they actually account for BF.

  • I used WW after DS1, I started it around 6 weeks PP with him. They have a BFing plan, I believe. Not sure what my plan is yet this time.

  • I'm actually thinking of permanently adopting a modified version of the gestational diabetes diet. I won't be as strict about portions (especially if BF) but I think the principles have done me some good: eating higher quality carbs, and eating them with protein & fat to slow sugar spikes & feel full longer. I never used to eat like that, I vacuumed up all the simple starches & sugars.

This is true. You get extra points to account for the calories you burn and the additional nutrition you need.
  • I am not going to worry about it right away because I don't want it to interfere with breastfeeding, but I plan to get back on using my fitness pal and counting calories. I was religious about doing it until about a month ago.

  • I plan on just going back to my 80 / 20 ways 80 percent healthy diet, 20 percent whatever I want like craft beer and burgers. Also as soon as I am cleared for exercise I'll be doing couch to 5k to help me get back into running and tons of park walking with my baby.

The 80/20 rule is what I follow for eating, so no "diet" per se, I'll just go back to eating better. And working out. Last time I started the 30 Day Shres by Jillian Michaels, and it's a perfect length workout to do during 25 mins of nap time or whatever.

  • I will be hard core dieting after not going to do anything that will sacrifice my milk tho. I lost 70 pounds before getting pregnant this time around. When the ms went away my ex Heffer self came back and I gained probably all I lose back:/ buuuut my sister is getting married in oct and I refuse to be the fattest one in the bridal party so that's HUGE motivation for me
  • I'm not going to worry about weight until I get established with BFing. Then I'll probably do the T25 workout and use my fitness pal to make sure I'm getting enough calories for BFing. I was about 10lbs heavier than I wanted to be before I got pregnant so I have the pregnancy weight and then some that I'd like to lose. I don't have a specific timeline though, I'll just see how it goes.

  • Yes, I'll be on the healthy eating/exercising/dieting bandwagon as soon ad I have DS. Last time after DD, I used My Fitness Pal, along with circuit training and/or running 5-6 days a week. I plan to do exactly the same this time around again too. I ate low carb and tracked every single thing in My Fitness Pal. Loved it! Once in a while I'll definitely allow myself to have some beer or wine. I can't wait for a Summer Shandy!

  • I need to download the app!
I've actually never heard of it until I saw posts about it on TB.
My SIL went on the Paleo diet 6 months PP and it COMPLETLEY drained her milk supply- which is my biggest concern.

I did WW in the past and it worked great for me, but DH and I decided to give MyFitnessPal a try because it was free. You can become friends with people you know on MFP and help to encourage each other. You can track food and exercise. It's super easy to use. Tracking my food seriously opened my eyes and made a huge difference for me.

That's interesting about the Paleo diet. I'd been thinking about doing some version of it, but definitely won't be trying it if it impacts milk production. I just tried out different things and adjusted calorie intakes until I found what worked great for me.

I think her issue is she just clearly wasn't eating enough calories. She was constantly light headed but she did lost a good amount of weight. The diet seems feasible but the 'no cheese or beans' would have me stumped. I LOVE both of those and can't imagine having a diet without legumes.

This was my plan. Funny I also used mfp and was 10lbs over when I got pregnant. I also love the beachbody videos. We should start a group on my fitness pal!

WW is what I'm going to go with when I'm cleared to do so. I lost 47 lbs on it in 2007 and kept most of it off (about 30 of it) until getting pregnant. It's an easy program for me to follow and I like that they have a BFing plan!

One of my girlfriends did the BFing plan WW offered after she had her baby last August and she said she didn't like the plan bc it allowed her too many points and she felt like she was eating all day long just to use her points. The new 'points plus' system is really nice though- all fruits and veggies are zero points so you do end up eating quite a bit sometimes (if you're like me and eat a ton of produce).
Years and years ago they had an expectant mothers plan- but took it away.
  • I plan on focusing more on healthy eating and exercise than a true diet. I plan to start T25 once cleared and BFing is established. I lost 15-20lbs twice with myfitnesspal and will be using that again.

  • I was thinking of doing WW after I had DD. I was worried that dieting would mess up breastfeeding, despite the extra points allowed for it. I never joined, never started an actual "diet", but I made sure to eat pretty healthy and make smart food choices. I lost all 50lbs I put on during the pregnancy, while eating dessert every night, but it took 9 months to do it. This time I'm keeping WW as a backup option in case the weight doesn't start coming off. I probably won't worry about it for at least 2-3months to make sure I get breastfeeding going well first. I do want to try to hit the gym to get my stomach back in shape. After I had DD I never found the time to work out and my body still looked 6m pregnant despite being back to my original weight. Maybe this time I'll make time for working out (with 2U2, yeah right!)

Like @IBackBevo‌, once nursing is established I'll be using My Fitness Pal. I used it after my last baby and it worked SO well. You can add in extra calories to your day for nursing.

  • I just plan on eating healthy foods and returning to my usual distance-running/hot yoga routine.

  • I wont be dieting as such but plan on tracking my daily intake on my fitness pal. I used it a year ago and managed to lose 15lbs just by becoming more aware of what I was eating. I'm also hoping to get a daily walk in, the city I live in has a lot of walking trails and we got a jogging stroller so I have no excuses.

I just plan on using MFP again to
Make sure I am eating enough (I tend to have a poor appetite) and getting a good macro balance to support BF which is my number one concern. Hopefully my food aversions will go away and I can return to my normal eating which while it is still good now has not been as great on the veggies due to the aversions. I will also start light home workout ASAP with my kettleballs (light weight at first) and hope to be back in the gym starting a progressive lifting routine and some HIIT around 8-10 weeks. Weight loss is nebulous to me- I need to gain back some of the muscle I lost and return to slowly trimming some of the excess body fat without driving myself crazy.

  • I was using MyFitnessPal before getting pregnant and loved it. Losing weight has to be a lifestyle change (permanent), not a diet (which is temporary).
