Slower weight gain?

At my last appointment, the doctor was happy with my weight gain.  I have 5 weeks between my last appointment & my next.  I am 3 weeks out from the last appointment, and when I stepped on the scale this morning, my weight was the same as 3 weeks ago.  I am in my 2nd trimester (26 weeks), so I know the expectation is around 1 lb. per week for me (I had a normal BMI & am expected to gain between 25-35 this pregnancy).  I've more or less been eating like I always have.  Should I be bumping up my caloric intake some more?  I just don't want to walk into my appointment 2 weeks from now and find out that I am under where they want me to be & it to cause any problems or worries.

My TTC Journey:
Dx: Hypothalamic amenorrhea / mild PCOS (Pretty much a hormone/ovulatory disorder)
Progesterone to induce period w/ the goal of Clomid - never got period (September 2011). Referred to RE.
Femera - never responded to the meds (December 2011)
Clomid with TI - BFN (February 2012)
Injectables (Menopur) - hyperstimulated/canceled (March 2012)
Injectables #2 (Menopur) with TI- BFN (May 2012)
IVF - OHSS (transfer canceled), but 11 frozen! (June 1012)
FET - 1 transferred on 8/09/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 350.3; Beta#2: 365; Beta#3: 157. Biochemical pregnancy.
FET # 2 - 1 transferred on 11/01/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 337; Beta#2: 769. BFP!!! 1st ultrasound 11/28/12 showed heartbeat, but measuring 5 days behind. 2nd ultrasound 12/05/12 - miscarriage.
FET # 3 - 1 transferred on 1/24/13. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): BFN.
FET # 4 - 2 transferred on 3/21/13.  Bet #1 (11dp5dt): 660; Beta#2: 1,300.  Miscarried at home @ 6 weeks.

FET # 5 - 2 transferred on 7/12/13.  Beta #1 (10dp6dt): BFN.
Attempted an IUI in late August 2013, but didn't respond well.
IVF #2 with PGS - Stims started 10/28 with retrieval on 11/11.  Of 14 mature eggs, 10 fertilized, 4 made it to Day 5 & 1 made it to Day 6. We did PGS on the Day 5 embryos, and 3 of 4 were normal. Had ET on 11/17. Beta #1 (8dp6dt): 203. Beta #2 (10dp6dt): 618. We since had two ultrasounds & on 12/19, our RE released us to the OB.  On 1/02/14, we had our first ultrasound with the OB where we heard the heartbeat.  We are so thankful for the blessing & crossing every finger & toe for a healthy & successful pregnancy.

Re: Slower weight gain?

  • I gained a lot in the 3rd tri. I wouldn't worry about it.

I was just trying to keep a steady weight gain so as to avoid gaining more at one time & possibly getting stretch marks.  Did you find you got them in your 3rd trimester?

  • I've been gaining weight super slow this pregnancy.  I'm interested to see what others have to say, but just wanted you to know you're not alone!  I gained 45lbs total with DS so this feels weird to me (I started out around 116, went down to 114 in my first tri, and now I'm hangin' around 125).  I have my appt on thurs so I'm gonna see if the doctor says anything about it then.

That being said I've found my weight gain to happen it fits and spurts. From 20-24 I gained like a mad woman and now it hasn't changed since week 24. My midwife was fine with that.
This is what I'm experiencing too.  They want it to average out to 1lb/week not that you actually have to gain 1lb each week.

  • I have gained eight pounds between weeks 8 and 23 (last time I was weighed.) But I don't own a scale, and have no idea what I weighed while we were TTC! I feel like I must have put on a few in those first eight weeks, especially since it was during the holidays. And pre-TTC I was about 10-12 pounds over what I normally am anyway. So I don't really know how to classify how much weight I've gained, although I guess it's good that it's going on steadily.

  • I wouldn't be super concerned about it. I gained nothing for 4 weeks, and then at my last appt I had gained 5 in the  next 4 weeks between appts. As long as they doctors are happy with your weight, try not to stress about it.
  • Thanks, guys.  It's difficult because there is no "standard."  I just haven't gained very much since about about 18 weeks (like 1-2 lbs.), and of course, I worry!  I am sure my body will do what it needs to do.  Just want to make sure this baby is getting everything it needs!

  • I've noticed I'll stay the same for a bit and then in like two days there's a 2-3 lb difference. I'm pretty sure how fast or slow you gain the weight doesn't determine wether you'll get stretch marks. I think some people are just more prone to them than others. I could be wrong.
  • Like everyone else said, weight gain rarely happens perfectly steadily for most women. In fact, I think purposely gaining several pounds now by over-stuffing yourself would be counter-productive in that you would just be putting on weight, it wouldn't be the baby growing.
