Mirena IUD

I had my baby 7 weeks ago (March 5), and an IUD placed at my 6 week appointment. I've only had it in for a week but I'm considering removing it because of some symptoms that I think are related to this device. I know hormones affect individuals differently but, any ladies here have experience with mirena? If so was there an adjustment period for you? Some things I am experiencing are headaches, backaches and extreme moodiness. Because I can't attribute the symptoms to mirena for sure, I'm curious to know about other women's experiences with this device pre or postpartum. Thanks for your help!

Re: Mirena IUD

  • The first 3 months was an adjustment if cramps, spotting, breast tenderness and thinking I was pregnant all the time. But not moodiness. After that time I loved it for the next few years.

  • I have told this story before but I will tell it again. In the begining it was definately an adjustment. I had the same symptoms as you. In about 2 -3 months they evened out and I loved it for awhile ( like 2 years) then headaches came back I started getting random breakthrough bleeding, extreme moodiness, sleepy, I completely lost my sex drive( like non existent), I dealt with it for a while but it started really hurting my relationship. I went to the dr to get it removed they looked for it and could not find it. Scheduled another apt with another dr from the practice she could not find it, I went for an ultrasound it moved and attached it's self to my uterus. I had to get surgery to get it removed. I'm not telling you to scare you but that is what happened to me. Some people love it some hate it, I loved mine for awhile. I'm not saying that you should get it removed just make sure you do all your research.
  • I've had my mirena in for two weeks. So far, my only symptom has been spotting. I would give your body some time to adjust before making the decision to have it removed :/
  • I only ever had spotting.

  • I had an IUD for 14 years and I loved it. I started with the paraguard which is the copper one, and I had that for 10 years until it had to be replaced. At the time, my doctor talked me into Mirena so I went with it. I had Mirena for a few months, and I hated it. I had weight gain, breakouts, moodiness. I switched doctors, had Mirena removed and paraguard put back in. I then had the paraguard for four more years without complaint. I will say that I remember my first two periods with paraguard 15 years ago were heavy and crampy. Then it evened out. I'm getting another paraguard placed in May.
  • I've never had it, but my sister has had it 3 times. Each time she starts it again she has backache, cramps, breast tenderness, spotting. It goes away in 2-3 months for her.
  • Thanks for all your responses! @nickied143 @SurpriseAt39 @amandoza23
I may just stick with it a bit longer to see if I do adjust but so far I'm not in love.
@mselliott08  today I began bleeding, cannot tell if its a "proper" cycle bleeding or just some breakthrough bleeding... but definitely more than spotting.
@coreyeliz How much weight gain, if you don't mind me asking? just a bit of bloat or more? I also gained some weight since it has been placed, but I didn't think it was because of the device. In any case, the reason I went with mirena was because the main complaint of the copper IUD is heavy bleading, something I already struggle with and didn't want to exacerbate.
@Momackf    OMG that's horrid, I'm sorry you went through that! I also read that they can migrate -- especially being placed postpartum

  • I had it for 4.5 years before having it removed to TTC. Just got my new one last week. I never had any issues with the old one other than some spotting at the beginning and so far nothing with this one. I even lost 50 lbs while I had it. I think everyone reacts differently to the hormonal aspect of it - just like people react differently to different BCP. However, if all evens out for you then you will most likely end up loving it.

  • I'm getting in on the 9th. I have extreme headaches without hormones so I opted for mirena over paragard. We'll see!

  • I kept mine in for 8 years, I didn't want to part with it. I had no problems no period after it was in for a month and lost weight while it was in. I had it removed and got BFP 3 months later. I loved mine so much I left it in 3 extra years. At that time the hormones are gone but it still worked due to being in place.
  • I went through 2 mirenas after DD was born and I loved it, recommend it to friends, and am getting another one next week. I never had any symptoms other than cramping and spotting in the beginning. The only thing I didn't like was getting it removed and replaced because it felt like my uterus was being ripped out of my body, but that only lasted for the appt. I also loved no period or PMS for the whole time and lighter periods after it was removed when we were TTC. Good luck!
  • @inlovewithrugby‌ - I gained 10lbs with the Mirena. Not much if you're tall, but I'm 5'3". I totally get your concern re heavy bleeding. I've never had a heavy period so didn't really consider that aspect. It might be worth it to see if you adjust to the Mirena?
  • I just got the paraguard placed today. I opted for this over Mirena because it has zero hormones. I was on depo & had some serious libido issues & for mine as well as DH sake I wasn't going to put us through that again. I also like that it lasts for 10 years instead of the 5 Mirena lasts. As far as the heavy bleeding goes I'm not worried about it. I haven't had a normal cycle in ages so maybe this will regulate me.
