3rd Trimester

Anyone staying on low dose aspirin through delivery?

I have been taking baby aspirin this pregnancy to prevent migraines with aura, but my MW told me to stop at 36 weeks. Well, yesterday I got one and then again a worse one today, complete with numbness and confusion. So, I am considering going against her advice. It seems from reading that some ladies do stay on it through delivery without problems for mom or baby. I'm curious to hear what your ob/mw recommends...

  • I've been on it as a precaution, and my doctor recommends stopping at 36 weeks, so this is my last week on it.

I have lupus and the lupus anticoagulant but without having a clot yet so baby aspirin is what I take for prevention but they had me stop that at 36 weeks so as to reduce the risk for hemmoraging either during vaginal or section. Id confirm again with them. Are there no other medications they can try for the migraines?

I wish. Nothing else works for me...

  • I have a brain stent and have to be on baby asprin they never told me to stop but I hate taking it
  • You need to talk on your midwife about your migraines and the risks of not stopping. Not the internet. I know it would be nice to choose your own course of treatment and have the internet back you up, but that is ridiculous and could potentially be dangerous for you during labor and delivery.

  • My dr put me on low dose aspirin and calcium carbonate to reduce my risk of having blood pressure issues again. She never mentioned stopping it before delivery.  I'll have to mention it to her tomorrow at my appt.

  • I was on a baby aspirin daily throughout my last pregnancy and am on it again with this pregnancy. I will stay on it until I get to the hospital to deliver. I take mine to fight blood clotting issue I have.

  • I am on it. I would strongly advise not going against medical advice without consulting with a doctor. If you don't trust that doctor's judgment, find another one.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Aspirin can be very dangerous, especially in the 3rd trimester and extra especially leading up to delivery.  You need to have your doc do an analysis.

This reminds me, I need to ask mine if I should go off my baby aspirin before my delivery, thanks!

  • I go to a MW practice and one said it's no big deal and one said I should get off... so go figure. In any case, I had my bloody show this morning (but no "real" contractions yet), so I guess I'll stay off!

  • For a medical issue we found out about after my 2nd was born, I was on it until delivery & afterwards for my third & will do the same this time around. Because it thins out the blood I did need a small dose of potocin after delivery of the placenta (which was a first for me that that was needed but again it was the first time I was on the low dose aspirin) to assist with clotting. I would speak with your provider about your concern because if something should happen at birth or afterwards it maybe due to the aspirin & they need to know this to keep you safe.

  • I'd suggest you to stick with your MW/OB recommendations. They know better. Good luck!

  • I take daily aspirin and Lovenox injections for a + Lupus anticoagulant. They haven't mentioned stopping the aspirin, just that I'll be switching to Heparin at 36 weeks. I'll ask my Dr. at my appt tomorrow about the aspirin.

I think in your case, it is more of a risk/benefit ratio. Is it more worth it to discontinue it now, and have migraines, vs. continuing it with no migraines, but more of a risk of hemorrhage. I agree with the others, and think thats a decision for you and your provider.

  • I've been taking it my entire pregnancy so far. I asked my Dr if I needed to stop for the 3rd ti and she said no.

  • I just got pulled off of baby aspirin in preparation for my csection in a week.  I was told it can complicate the epidural.
