Can Elsie be a stand alone?

I have always loved the name Elsa... however with the popularity of Frozen I am hesitant to go with this name as I am guessing Elsa will be rising in the ranks

I do like Elsie, but does this sounds too much like a nickname?  DD#1 is Adeline Lina.  Any other suggestions?

Re: Can Elsie be a stand alone?

  • I have to disagree with PP, as I have never known Elsie to be short for anything. I have heard of a couple of little girls named this and their names were only Elsie, it wasn't a NN.

    Maybe it's a regional thing?

  • Elsie is a nn to me, super cute, but I'd like a more formal fn. I like Elsa, I think it'll rise (a bit), but it'll not be the new Emma,

  • "Elsie" sounds very little kid to me. I just don't hear "Judge Elsie," yaknow? If you love Elsa don't worry about the possible Frozen effect. Also, "Elise" is very nice.

However...if you love Elsie, use it. It's not bad. Other people have told me the same thing about my daughter's name (Zoe), and clearly I still used it!

  • I've known people with the name Elsie. Definitely a stand alone where I'm from. :)

  • I had a great aunt named Elsie.  However, I prefer Elsa and I do not think it will be that popular.  Sure it will become more so but I don't think it's going to be top 10.  I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
  • I agree that Elsie can be a standalone name, but I like it better as a nn (for pretty much any name beginning with El-).

You are right that Elsa will rise (probably more in 2014 than in 2013 since the movie came out so late in the year). But if you are worried about the popularity issue, I don't think Elsie is different enough from Elsa to solve that problem. If Elsa is the name you prefer, use it. There is such a huge wave of El- names right now that you can't really get away from them with a minor change like Elsie instead of Elsa. So use the name you like best.
  • I don't care for it as a standalone, I don't think there's snything wrong with it though.
  • My cousin is Elsy Luna.

Same here. The first Elsie I ever knew was about 70 years old, the little old lady next door. :)

I don't understand this, as most Judges I have known are called Judge LASTNAME, television's Judge Judy notwithstanding.  I certainly never addressed anything to a Judge using their first name alone with the their title.  It's the same with doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.  Most business is conducted with last names, at least initially.

As far as Elsie goes, I think it's fine as a stand-alone name.  I've known a few, from old ladies to adorable pre-schoolers.  I also remember Elsie Edwards from the "Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade" series of books by Barthe deClements.

  • A friend named her daughter Elsie. Everyone thinks they're calling her LC as short for something, or that she was named the same as a cow. Just some food for thought.
  • I know a little girl who is 2 and named Elsie. I think it's adorable.

Too funny, Dr.Loretta! I used to hate my first name when I was young and toyed with the idea of going by my initials -- LC -- but I was always afraid someone would tie the name to the cow!

I think Elsa is a lovely name and Elsie is a cute nn. I do not think Elsa will sky rocket as a result of Frozen, since she was the sister in trouble, not the heroine. But if you really like the sound but don't want to run the risk of it becoming trendy, would you considered the similar sounding Scottish name, Ailsa?

Trust me, all the little girls at preschool are dressing themselves in blue and asking for "Elsa braids," not "Anna braids."

I am a elementary school teacher and that was exactly what I was worried about. Elsa seems to be the one that the kids are loving. That being said.... Thanks everyone for the input. The DH just informed me tonight that he is questioning whether he likes either of those names...  Guess its back the the drawing board!
