Can you feel thumb sucking or practice breaths?

For the past couple of weeks now, several times a day I can feel and see my belly pulse about twice per second, for 15 minutes or more at a time. It's not hiccups, it's not the frantic disorganized movement of distress or a seizure, and it's too rhythmic to just be random movement. And it's always in the place where her back is pressed against my belly.

I've narrowed it down to either sucking or practice breaths, but I think I'm leaning more toward sucking. It's the craziest thing! I never felt this with DS. For those of who who've felt it, do you know which it was? Was it sucking or breathing? I wonder if I have a little thumb sucker. It makes me wish I could catch it on ultrasound. That would be wild.

  • Loading the player...
  • It's definitely not hiccups. I know hiccups very well. DS had them almost constantly and this baby has them pretty frequently too. Tonight they actually followed this other movement, and they're distinctly different in pretty much every way, including timing and location.

  • I swear I can feel baby's breaths if she's laying up against my belly. I didn't even realize she could do that until they showed me on an ultrasound. It was so cute and now when I feel that pulsing I really think that's what it is. It's soooo light and I can only feel it rarely in the right position but I think it's possible.

Isn't it cool?? :) I'm super curious to know which movement it is. I might ask my OB on Wednesday at my checkup.

  • I think I've felt exactly what you're talking about.  I thought baby was either rubbing his hands together or sucking on his hand or something because it's regular, but not like a full body twitch like a hiccup.

  • I have definitely felt this as well but had absolutely no idea what it was. Hiccups I know for sure...but this is different. That would be so cool if it was breathing/sucking but I just have no way of really knowing.

If rhythmic pulses isn't hiccups, I have no idea because that's all i feel other than the other usual movements.

  • I can feel the practice breathing. I had. 3d ultrasound done and it confirmed that's what I was feeling. Hiccups have a very different feeling (to me, anyway.)

  • It is practice breaths...I actually asked the doctor about it because I feel them, too, sometimes. So cool!

  • I do! I'm pretty sure it is pulse/heartbeat when little guy has his back pressed firmly against placenta. Twice per second=120/minute, which I fairly close to fetal heart rate. That's my guess.
  • Yep, I've felt it! It's definitely not hiccups, those are way more noticeable. Pretty cool!

  • I was wondering the same thing. It feels like my little guy is rocking back and forth in there. It's definitely different from hiccups; he has those several times a day as well. My guess was the practice breathing.

  • Yay, I'm not crazy! Lol I'm really getting a kick out of being able to feel whatever this is. It's much gentler than hiccups, which can get a little irritating after a while.
