38wks w/ elevated bp and soreness

Hi ladies,

I am a FTM and I am looking for some advice. I realize that we are not doctors, but like I said just looking for advice. =]

I am 38wks and 4days. I went to see my OB last Thursday, and my BP was high 144/87 he checked it again before I left and it was 137/76. he let me go after talking about other symptoms to watch out for headaches, blurred vison, etc. and wanted to see me again on Monday (yesterday). Unfortunately, he wasnt there so I saw one of the NP, my BP was 137/82, not terrible, everything with LO is great. Now, for the last couple of weeks I have been waking up in the middle of the night, sometimes several times, with both my hands numb. I told the NP about this yesterday and she didnt seem to bothered by it, again we talked about other symptoms to watch out for, and that was it. She told me to come back on Thursday (I will see MY OB then). Today my hands are extremely sore, the joints hurt, to make a fist is hard and I cant grip anything firmly with out being in pain (typing this is uncomfortable). My question is this, is this something to be concerned about? Has anyone had the samething?

TIA

  • If your dr/np isn't worried then I wouldn't be. They'd know better than anyone else. Just because you didn't see your OB at that appt doesn't mean they don't know what's going on. The NP will usually pass along any important info. I get a similar feeling in my arms from time to time. Has to do with the blood flow and what not during pregnancy.

  • I am not saying that the NP doesnt know whats going on, they are ALL very knowledgable. I am just concerned about my hands being so sore, along with my BP being elevated. But your right, if they didnt seem concerned about it then I shouldnt be. They are the doctors.

    thank you

  • It could just be normal, from retaining excess fluid towards the end and blood flow issues. With your elevated BP, though, I'd be wondering too. If you are at all concerned, call or mention it to your doctor. You never know and at the very least, it can give you peace of mind if it's nothing.

    Trust your care providers.

I had both - elevated BP and the swollen, painful hands. I had pregnancy carpal tunnel for weeks before my BP issues. And then the swelling at the end only made it worse. Both went away after birth.

  • From what I've read, hand numbness is pretty normal, and isn't actually related to preeclampsia.  I've had that going on for at least three weeks now (I'm 40 weeks tomorrow).  My hands will fall asleep, and picking things up or making a fist can be a little difficult and painful.  It's probably a combination of swelling and ligaments relaxing.  If your NP isn't worried, I wouldn't be either.
  • Thank you ladies. This has all been very helpful, and has let me relax about it. Thank you again.
