  • Ok - question for the mean plan ladies: do you have older kids (in addition to the one you're expecting now) and at what point did you swap from random meal assembly to having a plan?

I used to plan (years ago when I lived alone), but it's taken me years to get DH to point of 1) thinking about food more than a few hours ahead of time and 2) eating leftovers.

So now we've arrived at the point of making a big dinner Sunday night, and having it last through Tuesday or Wednesday, but we don't plan the rest of the week. It's currently just the two of us, and I don't see our style changing that much with a newborn, since they font eat "food" for a while.

So basically I'm just impressed/jealous that yall ladies are able to plan ahead and stick to it, but I'm really curious - was this something you always did or did it come with the family expansion?

I didn't start meal planning until we had DS. Before becoming parents it was like, we'll figure something out. Now I meal plan to avoid multiple grocery store trips in a week and to make sure DS has a healthy and balanced diet.

I've been on meal plans since I moved in with DW in high school. Her family did it and I learned how to do it with a large family a be able to make it last. We held on to it in college, in our apartment and now in our home with our kids. Saves money really. I just write up a list of dishes they want to eat for that week, go shopping and get enough to last for days, get a few snacks and other necessities and go with the flow. Then, if I have ingredients left over, I'll try and put together something extra from that. I love it!

I have meal planned on and off for a few years. I basically do it now to track how much I'm spending and to try and use where we have/not waste stuff. I can tell you my fridge looks pretty bare but that's okay. It stays clean and not stinky and I can see the stuff in there.

I have meal planned since we got married. We used to eat out more often before DD was born, but now that she is old enough to eat food, I try to figure something out to make. DH will still not eat leftovers so for now I make something new each night.

  • Well that makes me feel better - I keep telling myself that it will start feeling more natural with a little one in the picture - at least I know there will be less impromptu happy hours (which is usually what throws the wrench into whatever plan I had attempted). I definitely get the cost savings part though, and that's why I'd love to do it more often.

And FTR: my meal "plan" for the week:
Sunday through Tuesday: chicken with tomato/veggie curry and Cous-Cous
Wednesday - free dinner via work (yay!)
Thursday - DHs parrents arrive for weekend visit (no clue)
Friday - homemade pizza (ok this one is also cheating because the four of us are taking a cooking class :) )

I've started meal planning since I got pregnant. DH is responsible for picking 2-3 meals by Sunday night. I shop for those recipes on Monday after school, and usually cook 3 meals a week, we go out once, order in once, and leftovers fill in the blanks. I was hoping that by getting going this way now, that it'll carry over when LO comes. This week...

Monday (yesterday): Chipotle lime grilled chicken with black bean and avocado salad
Tuesday: Crock pot pulled pork sammies
Wednesday: Indian style grilled chicken with mango relish OR leftovers (pulled pork makes lots)
    Thursday: Trivia/eat out
    Friday: Leftovers or order in

  • @ashleymarie1027

I used to meal plan a little bit the year before I got married because I was doing Weight Watchers. That stopped maybe a year after I got married. I started it again last summer because DS was eating more table foods and I wanted us to do healthy family dinners. It fell apart when I got pregnant and wasn't feeling well, but I'm getting back into it. I also started budgeting for food, so this helps with the budget. I work full time and I'm still tired with being pregnant. I also don't have much time after work to get dinner ready for DS's super early dinner time. (I get home at 3:30 and he's ready to eat at 4:30.) So I try to make meals that last more than one day and then give myself a break one or two days a week where we just eat cereal or pasta.
