Diaper changing battle

All of the sudden I can't keep LO distracted while I change her diaper.  It's like an epic battle. Every. Time.  New toys/objects work for like 5 seconds.  All she wants to do is flip over.  Today she had a huge poopy diaper and I had to yell for DH because shit was about to hit the fan. Literally.  And when DH was holding her down she was screaming like we were killing her.

Does anyone have some life-changing strategies for this?  Do I just suck at changing diapers?  I'm really scared of the next poopy diaper when DH isn't home.

Fun, isn't it? For both of mine it seemed like a stage. And it amazes me how they are so little, yet so, so strong. Unfortunately no advice though.

  • Glad to hear I'm not the only one. He screams. So much. I've found trying to do raspberries on his belly helps a bit sometimes. Other than that I try and go as fast as possible. If mine had a strap Id use that.
  • This is DD when I try to suck the snot iut of her face. Who knew babies can be that strong. I try to trick her and use my ninja skills, but most of the time I lose. I will try the strap next time.
  • Same boat... :(

  • The only things that work for us are giving him another diaper to play with and signing muppets songs at the top of my lungs.

    Ditto on the diaper.

I now change DS on the floor. I will put my leg over his chest/belly to hold him down when DH isn't home and he gets too squirmy. It's like a wrestling match sometimes.

I've done this too!! lol It feels so wrong to pin them with your leg but what else can you do?
Especially when they eat blueberries the day before, lol.

Oh I hate when this happens. If LO is unhappy or hungry, it's even worse. No advice though. I usually have to keep flipping him over
  • This happens to us every single time as well... It's such a challenge! Before each diaper change, I search te house for a new item for LO to play with for a minute... That's the only thing that helps.. But a friend recommended something to me recently... Has anyone tried this?! (Hulabye Happy Changer: https://hulabye.com/) Apparently it works great!

*On 4.28.11 we said goodbye to our angel baby (D&E at 18.5 weeks)*
  • Drives me crazy! I sit on the couch and put a foot over each arm to hold him down when he's got a poop. I had to do that with every single diaper change for one DS1. He was really bad at getting away.
  • The floor. I don't give her toys, but things she doesn't usually get to play with. Right now the night light keeps her pretty well distracted.

  • We have been dealing with this for a long time. Since learning to roll (5 months ago?) Ds hates to be on his back and will roll over immediately. Moat changes are a fight. Even if stapped as tight as possible he can still roll over. It is hit or miss, but sometimes a toy will distract him, or something he shouldn't have but wants (phone, lotion bottle, brush).

  • Same here!!!! I usually ask her to hold something for me but now she figured out how to throw things so that doesn't even help. Grrrrr

This changer would make LO scream bloody murder! But for sure is better than nothing... I think I will try the V-shaped thing from @NKaeding :)

The strap (which sounds so harsh!) and singing. Mickey Mouse songs, Itsy Bitsy, Johnny Cash.
Sometimes calling him a stinky boy, holding my nose and saying P.U. over and over again distracts him into giggles long enough to change a diaper but not everytime.
  • @casey78‌ lol that's a great mental image

  • I give him items to play with that are usually off limits like the remote or my cell phone. Sometimes they distract him and other times he is a banshee trying to flip and crawl all over the place. And getting him dressed I have to follow him around the living room.. it is ridiculous.

  • Cell phone, nose aspirator, or another diaper is all that works sometimes. Forbidden objects FTW!!! :D
  • I wish I had a time lapse video of me changing his diaper.
  • Glad I'm not alone!  I think I got some good ideas, THANK YOU!  I didn't even think about using my legs!  Ninja time.

  • This is us to a T. It's a fight every single time. Lately I give her something she always wants but can't usually have. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There are times I have to hold her down with the length of my arm and try changing her one handed. I hope this "phase" ends soon. Naps have also become a screaming torturous battle. Ugh.

  • This is normal but frustrating. I sing & make funny faces.

This. I also make really bizarre noises.
  • We are right there with you. I dread diaper changes. We've tried changing on the floor with some success. And we give him different things to play with as well. He's a big fan of socks right now. Sometimes I'll put a sock over one of his hands. By the time he pulls it off, chomps on it and swings it around, I can usually get the diaper changed.
  • Toys, fake sneezing, saying PU stinky over and over again.... Sometimes nothing works and DH needs to help me. Somehow he hasn't resisted everything when I'm home alone.

This is when I give her the cell phone. It will keep her occupied for the two minutes it takes to change her. Yesterday she managed to change the name of one of my app folders to something completely in emoji.

Silas made me a FB status the other day in emoji.

  • Same thing here. He flipped and crawled away yesterday 3 times before I got the diaper fully on straight and his onsie snapped. He's much better on his changing table.

  • Sometimes a toy, sometimes another diaper. When DH is home he will hold her down and Ill change her. It really is a battle. She is always sticking her hands in it.

  • All of the above: singing, weird noises, tickles, new toys, old toys, the tub of ointment (like a drum - she loves it!), the bottle of nasal spray, the tub of baby Vicks. Wiggle WORM! :)

Her favorite is flipping over while diaperless and throwing her leg off of the side for an escape.  :-SS
