Rice Cereal

FTM here. At the mom group I go to bi weekly some of the moms were talking about the variety of ages that they began feeding their LO's rice cereal or when they skipped the cereal and jumped right into the baby led weaning. Curious if anyone has given their LO rice cereal yet?

    This.

Then we'll do a mix of BLW and purées. With my daughter we didn't start solids on a regular until she was 1 year old. I am wondering if that might be part of the reason she is so picky now.
  • 13 weeks and no plans to do rice cereal ever.

  • 18 weeks and we started rice cereal last Wednesday. We tried for a few days, but he has no interest in it. We're going to wait a couple weeks and try again. If he shows interest in our food before then we will try earlier.

  • We skip rice cereal completely.  When Holly is 4 months we'll start giving her pureed food (single type) once a day.  The once a day "feeding" won't replace a meal, it'll just get her used to a spoon and the texture of food.  Around 6 months we will start using food to replace a feeding and go from there.

aneubecker did your doc tell you to give your LO oatmeal for the reflux? We've been on two types of reflex meds and are still struggling to get her reflux under control.  I have an appt with our pediatrician tomorrow to try to talk next steps.
  • DS is showing several signs of readiness so we will start this weekend.

@sugarland726 -- school me, oh wise one. What are signs of readiness? I could Google it, but I like hearing (reading?) what you have to say.
  • We never gave DS1 rice cereal, and I won't with DS2.
We won't let him have anything other than breastmilk until 6 months.  If he starts wanting to 'eat' before then we will give him a plastic kid bowl and baby spoon to play with, maybe with a bit of water in it.  He already sits in his highchair with us at the table for meals, but is just happy smiling at DH across the table for now.

  • I'm starting on Saturday when she's 4 months. A lot of ppl on here are told 6 months...I have no clue why my doc says 4 months, but I'm going with it. I did with DS and he was much fuller for much longer.

@peanutmuse, he has become very interested in what we are eating or the older babies at daycare. Always watching when we eat. He also has increased his milk intake. I prepared bottles last Monday and his teacher said he screamed when every bottle was finished. Thinking it was a fluke, I repeated the same size the next day and he had the same reaction. When I increased the bottle size he was back to his happy, satisfied self. Over the course of the day it was a 2 ounce increase. He's able to hold himself up, he's of a good weight (14 pounds at 3 months; we find out tomorrow how much he weighs for his 4 month well child). Those are some of the signs I looked for to give it a try. If he rejects it, I'll wait 2 weeks and try again.

We will wait until this weekend because I typically have to wake him for daycare so I don't have time to try it in the morning, and I want him awake for awhile after we try it for the first time. That doesn't happen in our evenings when he is in bed around 6:30.

  • Thank you everyone for all of the input. It's nice to hear what others have to say or what your plans are. I'm interested to know for those that are skipping the rice cereal all together how come? I'm new to this and haven't done enough research so am all ears to hear suggestions or info from other moms! Thanks again :)
  • Thanks, @sugarland726. We're not ready to start yet, but I had noticed over the past few days that when I'm eating in front of Brennon, he will move his mouth kind of like he's mimicking my chewing. I think it's super cute and wondered if it might be that he's starting to notice things like that. Not necessarily that he understands what it means, but more that he's copying what I'm doing. He copies a lot of my other facial expressions (see below, haha) so it's not surprising.
  • I'm skipping rice cereal because from what I've heard/read it provides no nutritional value, just extra calories, which my LO doesn't need.

No rice cereal. My ped advised against it due to lack of nutritional value and tendency to cause constipation. He said oatmeal in 4-6 weeks but we'll probably wait closer to six months unless she shows readiness.

that's very interesting. DD loves sitting in her high chair and talking to us at dinner and likes to chew on. Her high chair straps when she sees us eating. I'll have to watch out for other signs in the coming weeks.

Yes. It's a very common way to help with reflux and makes a HUGE difference. I recommend at least asking about it

  • brittanydec2012 I'm meeting with my pediatrician tonight about reflux, but will ask again why we skip rice cereal. I believe our doc told us that kids who start on rice cereal have a higher chance of developing food allergies.  I feel like that is what she told us, but I don't really remember since we had the conversation over two years ago.
  • We just started on oatmeal and we plan to test out purees in a few weeks. Our pedi told us DD is more than ready and she has definitely increased her intake of formula. She's 16 lb.

@peanutmuse, that is also a sign of readiness, though Max isn't showing that particular one, so I didn't include it. I wouldn't start him on cereal with just one sign, but since DS is showing several signs, I personally feel comfortable giving it a try. Sounds like Brennon is inching along that path too.

  • We'll be doing oatmeal and purees starting around 4 months. No rice since she already has minor constipation issues. For purees, we'll start off with seasonal veggies from the local farm stands. Lucky for us we live in farm stand country and none of them use pesticides on their crops.

She's showing some signs of readiness as well- watches us intently when we eat and smacks her lips a long with us. But that's as far as it goes- she's still a bit small so we will see how her weight is at her 4 month appointment because I don't really want to get her started on solids and then decrease her formula intake. The past week though she's definitely upped her formula consumption and has gotten remarkably easy to feed. We'll see what her pedi says.

  • I skipped rice cereal with DS1 and did homemade oatmeal at 6 months instead. We switched to BLW after about a month of him refusing to eat off of a spoon. With DS2 I'll probably skip cereal all together and go right to BLW.
