Re: Tummy time

  • I was told once umbilical cord falls off. Anyone having an issue with baby rolling over when doing tummy time? Every time I put my son on his belly he just rolls over.

I've read 2 weeks, so we're starting next week.
  • Yup when the cord comes off and until they start fussing.

  • We weren't told to wait for the cord to fall off. DS is two weeks, still has cord stump and we've done tummy time twice, but only for a couple minutes each time.

  • We were told that the cord was irrelevant. She started last week, but only for a couple of minutes at a time.

From his belly to his back? My LO isn't doing this but it sound like your DS is pretty advanced! I didn't think this was something they could do until a few months old. Although, I'm a FTM so I could be wrong.

Try putting him on the boppy if you have one.

Mine do too if their arms are tucked. I have to make sure I pull their arms flout from under them

  • It's really odd the does it either way with his arms. His sister doesn't do it. It just looks like she's surfing lol.
  • I started doing tummy time when she was a week old and she still had her cord. She doesn't do much when I put her on her tummy though. She just lays there contently with her head turned to the side. The only time she tries lifting her head is when she starts fussing so I let her fuss for a few second before picking her up.

  • We've done some on my chest at this point but that is it. Of course whenever she is awake and on me she just wants to suck on me so this resulted in her giving me a hicky.

She is only 6 days so we will do more after next week.

  • Our pedi said we could wait for his stump to fall off and that tummy time on our shoulder/stomach is good enough for now.
  • When (after bath/before eating/while sleeping) do your LO's seem to enjoy tummy time? I've never done it other than on my chest, I didn't realize you can start so early. My baby is having a really fussy day and I wonder if this would help her belly.
  • Does anyone else's LO hate tummy time? Mine will only stay on his tummy for about ten seconds before he starts fussing. (He's three weeks old)
  • We started tummy time as soon as we were home. Our ped said waiting for the umbilical cord to fall off is just so new parents don't freak out if the belly button starts bleeding. There aren't any nerves, so no pain.

  • The pediatrician told us we could start right away. It does really well with it. Occasionally, I'll roll up a blanket and tuck it underneath him to help.

It's like an art to find a good time for tummy time for my LO. If I try while sleeping she'll just sleep! If I try before eating she'll cry and cry. Since most times she'll eat and then fall asleep I have to sneak it in during one of the few times that she has a full belly but isn't trying to nap.
Now that she is older (5 weeks) I find these periods of awake time are more frequent.
  • I never did tummy time with DD1, and she manages to hold her head up fine. She hated it intensely. So, I pretty much think it's bunk. DD2 holds her head up when I burp her and when I pick her up and I bet she'll also not have floppy head if we don't do dedicated tummy time.
