Counting Kicks?

On my app for this week---23 weeks---it says to start counting kicks and should be able to feel about 10 in an hour or two. Kicks? I think I've only even felt the little inside vibrations twice already, definitely no kick! As far as I know, I don't have an anterior placenta--they didn't tell me at my last u/s which was 2 weeks ago, and I forgot to ask. Anyone else not yet really feeling baby too much? Reading this thing about the kicks really started to make me nervous, we are definitely not in kick stage yet...

I'm almost 26 weeks and I don't feel kicks that often. Some days I don't feel them at all.

Too track movement. It is not just kicks, you count any movement for a period of time.

@allygirl520 Count kicks to get a general sense of well being for the baby.  It can indicate fetal distress if movement has suddenly slowed down.  It is still too early though.
AAAh I gotcha.   That makes sense.

  • Yeah, with my first, I didn't feel that many kicks from him on a regular basis even later on in the pregnancy. There's no need to worry, it's still early. Just jot a note down to ask your doctor about it at your next appointment if you want to know what he or she would be concerned about.

  • I asked my OB about kick counts at 25 weeks and he said its too early. I have an anterior placenta this time and I don't feel kicks often, but I will feel him stretch and roll. Just notice when baby moves and you'll notice patterns and how much movement is normal for your baby. Keep in mind that babies sleep, and have sleepy days.

  • I've been doing it for fun, but my OB hasn't mentioned anything to me yet.

  • As far as I can tell, I haven't felt really too much movement. Just the 2 almost definite big flutters. I've had 3 u/s's so far, and at every one she's been very active, rolling around and kicking, I just haven't really felt it. It was kind of crazy to see at my last u/s how much she was moving on that screen and to know that was going on inside of me but I couldn't feel anything.
For my own peace of FTM crazy mind, I hope i start feeling some more distinctive movements soon!
  • I've felt a lot of kicks and movement.  But it's not consistent at all.  Some days I feel him all day long and other days very minimally.  I figure I won't worry about counting kicks until my doctor tells me to.

  • Ever since I started feeling movement (around 18 weeks) it was pretty consistent. The past week or so I definitely still feel movement but it has slowed down a little. I've been told (and read) that baby is starting to settle into sleep cycles so it is perfectly normal. There were definitely a couple days I was concerned and tried the whole lying down and drinking OJ (which did nothing btw!). It had me a little freaked out then sure enough I'd get a big kick eventually and know all is well :) I think as long as you are feeling movement not to worry. I'd go crazy if I tried counting so many in an hour!

  • My OB never even had me count kicks at all last time. I wouldn't stress about it, especially this early!

  • I heard you don't need to count till 28-30 weeks. My LO is having a little dance party most days inside so I get nervous when I don't feel her for awhile but I remind myself it's too early to be counting or feel consistent movement

  • Definitely seems too early! I'm getting consistent movement on and off through the day, but I don't think it would meet "kick count" cutoff.

I don't recall counting with J either, he had times I expected activity, and quiet times, but the quiet never stretched excessively to the point I was worried. He was fairly consistent in his routine. And then he was born... and gave up predictability!

  • My doc never had me count kicks.  He just said as long as I was feeling movement regularly, everything was fine.  If you're not feeling movement like normal and all the regular tricks (cold water, different positions, sugar) don't work, then there might be cause for alarm.
Most of the time, if I am worried, I can mush around on my belly a bit and make the baby mad and it would kick me.
