Constant nasal congestion?

Leila's nose always sounds stuffed up! It's not runny at all and she isn't sick but I always hear it in her breathing and its louder when she's eating. Its been this way for a few months now. Anyone else dealing with this?

Re: Constant nasal congestion?

  • Kahlan has had a cold for a month now. It gets worse at night. I'm 90% sure it's a cold....

  • YES! This has always bothered me & I don't know what it is! It sounds like congestion but it's also not runny, & when I go to suction her nose there is nothing there. Sometimes I wonder if the sound is coming from her throat? I still don't know what that would mean though.
  • Do your babies have reflux? It can cause chronic stuffy nose, especially when they are laying down. My LO has this too and I've just assumed it's her reflux. She is fine during the day and has no other symptoms to make me think it's a cold.
  • Same here! I've used the saline drops and the nasal asportor. She has huge boogers that are blocking her nasal passages. I hope she clears up soon!!

  • Mine has the boogers. And no diagnosed reflux, but I'll mention it at her pedi appt tomorrow. I was already planning on mentioning the congestion.
  • Babies have tiny tiny nasal passages so dried mucos and boogers (even tiny ones) can cause a whistle/congestion. Avoid the fan (can move te dust around too much), use a cool most humidifier and saline and nasal aspirator as needed. They'll grow out of it.

@mavgirl_73‌ Is there a specific reason you recommend cool mist? I've been using a warm mist humidifier for this issue...is that bad? Just wondering! TIA!

  • O has been congested since day one. A couple of weeks ago, he got his first cold, which made him even more congested. We used a cool mist humidifier (along with saline drops and an aspirator), and now that he's better, his congestion isn't as bad as it used to be.

    Mav is wise.

  • @RanFan28‌ the warm mist will make the air even dryer and cause more congestion (at least that's what I've read)
  • My LO has been congested sounding since day one too. Bothers me bad! We've tried the cool humidifier, saline drops, and now Frieda but nothing has helped so far. It has started to increase about a month or so ago and dr said it could be allergies. Starting giving her Claririn for kids, haven't noticed that much of a difference. Then past week or so she's had a super congested sound and I can get a lot out of her nose, all clear and no cough so far. So I'm not sure if it's teething related or if she's getting a cold. It's just so said and sometimes so scary to hear her like that. Hope something helps soon!
  • @RanFan28‌ warm mist is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. We also use the Vicks brand that is filter free.

  • If it's allergies, which mine has in addition to dry air it is something that will have to just be maintained. Teething can cause an increase in saliva, mucus, snot, basically their faces become water fountains. As long as all fluids are clear and relatively thin I wouldn't be too concerned.

Ill try the saline and cool mist-doc said it could be that her nasal passages are small and she will grow out of it but I'm still worried.
