Baby Shower Date

So, my mom/mother-in-law are trying to pin down a date.

Because my mother-in-law has a vacation planned spanning two weekends, and will have to likely work the weekend before and after, there is a chunk of 4 weeks where she can't do it or attend. I want her there, so those weekends are out.

They're tossing around July 19th or August 23rd and asking my preference I feel like 27+ weeks (July) is early. I feel like 32+ weeks (August) is a little late, especially since my mother and grandmother both went early with their children (I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but don't they tend to ask you that as sometimes things like this can be genetic?), and I'd want some time to finish things up and write thank yous before the baby.

I'm over thinking it all, huh? August is fine, huh?

Re: Baby Shower Date

  • Friend started asking me about dates this weekend. She and another new mom friend suggested a late 2nd tri date because they had time to get everything together before baby came. I was thinking mid-3rd tri so that I could waddle around with the big belly that is appropriate for the baby shower. I would go with the later date. At 32 weeks, you would still have 5-8 weeks to write thank-yous.

  • I will be 32+ weeks as well on the 23rd of august and that's when I am planning to have my shower I think it should be fine we have a lot of birthdays in our family from July to September and that was the only weekend that would be free with out me feeling like I was taking away from any ones special day its 3 days before my birthday but I don't mind.

  • I have a 10/20 due date and I have a shower planned for 8/2 and one for 8/9. I would have been ok going later in August for the in town shower, but my parents will be out of town so the next available date was mid September which was cutting it close to me.

I think either of those would be fine. I don't think 32 weeks is too late!

My shower for DD was 5 weeks before my EDD.  I was worried about the timing but it ended up being great, I was all hugely pregnant but no so sore and tired that I couldn't enjoy it.  For me though, any earlier would have run into Christmas/New Year's so it wasn't really an option.

ETA: to answer your question, I think 32 weeks is plenty early enough and like PP siad, it will give you time to write thank you notes before baby is here.

  • I was scared these were the answers I'd get!

I can't decide. I feel like 27 weeks will be so early that my judgy family will be mean about it, but I don't know about 32 weeks.

  • I am in the same situation. I think I am having my shower July 13, because my family will be in town for Florida that date and I really want my cousin and her daughter to come. It IS super early, but whatevs! Gives way more time to get organized!
  • I really don't think August is that late. I'm doing one on August 16, and it never even crossed my mind that was too late. So I don't think a week later would make much difference.

  • I would do 32 weeks. You still have 2 months until your due date. At that point last time, I wasn't super uncomfortable yet.

I'm having my shower in mid June @ 23 weeks.  Some of my family thinks that is too early but I quickly give them the, "it's not your decision" look and they don't argue.

    My reasons:
1.I live in Phoenix and I don't want to pass out from heat exhaustion by having this shower in July or August (June is a little more bearable and there are very rare chances of monsoon storms.)
    2.  I don't want to be huge and miserable.  My sisters both had theirs a month away from their due date and the poor things were uncomfortable and could hardly fit into anything, including their shoes.
    3.  I am a teacher and as soon as school starts (1st week of August) I don't have time to focus on anything except work.  I also have summers off, so having a shower at the beginning of summer allows plenty of time to clean, organize, return any gifts and buy the items that baby still needs.

Have the shower when you want it.  Don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

    This!
  • I think either date is good. It sounds like you have a slight preference for the earlier date. We've had a lot of premature babies in our family so I understand where you are coming from. I can't see why someone would be judgy about having a shower at 27 weeks, but even if they are I think it's more important that you not to stress yourself out worrying that your shower is too late.

Oh and regarding premature babies running in the family, I was born two months early, my brother's two children were born one month and two months early, my sister's son was born at 26 1/2 weeks. I was terrified of my daughter being born early. She was born the day after my due date. Try not to stress about that too much. Just because it has happened in your family doesn't mean it will happen to you.

    I think 32 weeks sounds perfect. :)

With my first I had 2 showers. They were at 36 weeks and 37 weeks! I was due in August and between graduations, wedding and people's vacations it was so hard to pick a date. Those were the weeks my hosts could do them so that's what I got. I was kind of freaking out because it was so close to my due date and I would have liked to have everything bought and ready by then. It all worked out though, DS1 was 2 days late so I still had almost a month to get everything set up. It was kind of nice actually, it gave me something to do the last month instead of just sitting there (very impatiently) waiting!

Edit: FTR, I wasn't working and I had a really easy pregnancy and still felt fine up until the end. I can see how those two things could make a big difference.

  • My shower for DS was in February and he was born in March. I think it'll be fine if you have the shower around 32 weeks.

  • My mom and SIL set my date last week. I'm due Oct. 4th and having my shower July 26th. I don't think August is late at all. I had to do this date because it's the only time SIL will be in town and she wants to help throw the shower.

  • I haven't read all the other responses, but wanted to throw in that I was 35 weeks for my shower with DD, and I was concerned about that being too close.  It worked out great - we had plenty of time to get the room cleared out and ready so we would have a place to put all the shower stuff, and then still a couple of weeks to get whatever else we thought we needed that we didn't receive as shower gifts..

So I don't think 32 weeks is too late at all.

  • I think either date works. Originally I was going to say to go for the 32-week date, but then I realized that was only because MY OWN July was so jam packed and July wouldn't have worked for me, haha! Clearly that has nothing to do with you. My shower will be on August 17. :)

  • I'm due the 15th and having my shower July 26th. :)
  • I think you could do either but you should be fine at 32 weeks. My shower was at 33 weeks and I was fine.

And I know it's hard not to wonder if you'll go early cause others in your family did, but you never know! Yours could be late!

We just booked ours on August 23. I don't think its that early and I'm due October 6.

  • I think either one is fine. It also depends on what you will be doing (indoor or outdoors?). If you have anything outdoors, the bigger you get, the less you might enjoy it.

I'm due Oct. 21 and we decided on July 26 since some out of town family will be able to attend then.

On another note, my sister-in-law just gave birth seven weeks early (just one week after her baby shower). So I think I would opt for an early shower just in case. It's ultimately whatever you feel comfortable with and no matter what you won't please everyone.

  • I'd stick with the August date personally.
  • I'm due 10/10 & I'm having mine in mid June. DH & I are flying home to visit with the family so it's the only time we will be around. It's about whichever you feel comfortable with & can have the people you love with you. I think either date works. Just go with what makes you feel the most relaxed!

  • I had showers for DS1 at 28wks, 32 wks, and 36 wks.  Honestly, all were fine.  The only thing rough was the 36 week shower was 2 hours away (the last weekend before I was suppose to stay an hour radius from the hospital. )

  • For ds I had a shower at 27/28 weeks, one at 32 weeks and one at 37 weeks. 27 definitely felt too early. Really the 32 weeks was perfect.

  • I had my shower at 32 weeks and it was fine. It gave me enough time to get everything ready. I did not buy anything for the baby until after my shower so it was bit of a time crunch but I had enough time nonetheless (I wasn't working).

If you plan on waiting to buy stuff until after your shower, then I wouldn't go beyond 32 weeks and in fact 27 weeks might be the better option so that you don't feel stressed. However, if you plan on getting the nursery somewhat ready and buy some items yourself before your shower, then I think that 32 weeks should give you plenty of time to finish up everything you need.

  • I flew to the east coast from Seattle for my shower, so we had it in April for a July 4th EDD. I didn't want to fly past 30 weeks and the timing was perfect IMO. No one even questioned it being too early.

  • 32 weeks sounds perfect. Everyone will want to see you beautifully pregnant ;)
My showers with my first were all between 36 and 38 weeks ( I had 5 lol, I know-ridiculous), and honestly I was really uncomfortable and had to take constant bathroom breaks. I still had time to send all my thank you's.

  • I think 32 weeks is perfect! Mine was at 34 weeks, though I wanted it a little sooner, but I still felt fine and had plenty of time to get everything together before baby came at 39 weeks.

  • This might sound self centered but because it's my first pregnancy I'm afraid of what I might look like and feel the longer I wait so my shower will be Aug 2nd 8 weeks before my due date. Plus it'll give me time to get things together before the baby arrives
  • I'm glad you posted this as I was trying to figure out my shower date too. My due date is October 4 and the entire month of August is tough until August 23, as there are too many birthdays and a friend that has a beach  house week, etc....etc.... July just seems too early for me so I too am aiming for August 23rd. I will be 34 weeks, so cutting it pretty close. But hoping not too close. The problem is - its either August 23rd or I have to try for mid-July.  I'm open to any thoughts on this too.

  • My shower is August 3rd at 30 weeks. I wanted it later at around 34 weeks, but a wedding is that day.

  • I am having a shower on July 13 and August 17.
  • My due date is October 4th and my shower date is July 13th. My SIL is due Aug. 1st and I really want to have her there so I'm trying to plan it before August and September is too late for me. July is fine and I have more time to get organized while I'm still feeling good. Good luck! :)
